Question Question About Sound Cards

This may sound silly, but are sound cards "backward" compatable?
In other words if a person buys a 5.1 or surround sound or Dolby type card, will it work with say standard desktop speakers, powered or non-powered?

The reason I asked was because I'll be getting a pair of speakers for my test bench. (powered)
I will be able test all kinds of sound cards this way.
Thanks for the help Hal and Homer.

Hey Kubie, I am from Modesto, CA, too. I work for Maximum3D, one of the other sites owned by PC Mech. What site do you work for?

padawan,
I just changed my user name from "Carlgif". Remember, you wanted me to attend one of your classes in Manteca.
I don't work for a site.
I work for Yale-Pacific.
