for some strange reason if you live in the us and need updated drivers for a umax scanner its gonna cost ya. i was reading the august issue of maximum pc mag an umax charges 28 bucks. umax calls it a program, because its 30 meg download (bandwith costs) but get this, Maximumpc list sites in the uk, germany where the same drivers (program) are free.
no umax scanner for me.....

Hp makes better scanners than just about anyone anyway and all their drivers and all kinds of upgrades are generally free. Am using a 5407C and most pleased with HP service and standards for free drivers and assistance.
Most likely the bigger companies like HP will always offer such things at less or no cost, where smaller companies with less of the market share of sales for scanners and such will have to charge because they don't sell as many units. Stick with Hp and you can't go wrong I say. For quality, service and price, they are great. Have had Hp scanners for 12 years. and that includes only two scanners. The first one didn't die for almost 10 years. Texas2Step |

when I first bought my umax it seemed that I had too go through way too much trouble just to register it, like calling long distance and waiting an hour to talk to someone to get a key. Before I go through that again I will buy a different scanner. Thanks for the warning; scott.

Too bad. Years ago Umax was one of the best scanners made, especially for the price. I agree, you can't go wrong with HP now. I will also stand behind Canon, Visioneer, Acer (BenQ), and Microtek. Never played with an Epson, but I understand that they are excellent.

Compaq is now charging for a lot of their updates. Some of the Armada notebook drivers are by subscription only. Twenty Five dollars for one month or Two Hundred Dollars for One Year!
