Just got a Bus Link 4800 cd-rw drive and i was trying to get it working with a sony cd-drive... (forgot the model number... im not at home right now). I had the sony drive connected through secondary ide connection.. and the half way through connection i plugged that into the cd-rw... set the sony drive to master and cd-rw to slave... when ido this.. the cd-rw drive is not recognized at all by the computer... i tried some other combos and can't get the computer to recognize the cd-rw. The only way my computer does recognize that drive is if i directly connect that through to secondary ide... skipping the sony drive... when i do that... computer recognizes that as a cd drive but not the fact that its a cd-rw :-(. I have no fricking clue why its doing that... someone HELP!

Don't worry about that. The drive will work fine. Computers see them as CD-ROMs only. The drivers are the same as CD-ROMs, too.
It sounds like it should be able to burn. Try it and see. I had the same problems when I got my burner couple mos. ago.

Hi imademyfirstcomputer,
Some CD-ROM's and CD-RW's just don't like being on the same IDE channel together. You may have to separate them. Have you tried another IDE cable yet? Are you sure the drive jumpers are set correctly (master, slave with a 40 wire ATA33 cable). You could try putting the Sony on the primary IDE channel as the slave to the hard drive (use the CS jumper setting if you're using a 80 wire Ultra ATA cable). In order to burn CD's, you have to install the burning software. Without it, the CD-RW is just another CD-ROM to the computer. Cricket

Is the burner recognised by the BIOS when you boot up?
Try using a standard 40 wire IDE cable on IDE 2 and setting the burner to Master and the CD-Rom to slave. Try a different IDE cable. |

I use a standard 40 wire IDE cable for my cd-rom and the cdr-w. One is set as Master, and the one is set as slave, and it works fine.

When the BIOS recognised the burner, did you check in Device Manager to see the proper make and model was listed under the CDRom branch?
If it is listed, you should just install your burning software and then be able to use it. All the burning is then done thro the software. |

Try setting the CD-ROM as CS and the CD-RW CS aswell, and see if that helps. I don't know if anybody suggested that. Also check in the BIOS to make suree that the BIOS identifies both drives as one Master and the other as Slave.

If that's a brand new model burner, you may have to get the latest update for your burning software in order for the software to recognize the burner.

Hi imademyfirstcomputer,
Yeah, make sure the burning software supports that CD-RW drive. Go to the Nero and Roxio websites and see if that CD-RW is a supported one. You may need to download and install an update. Cricket

Hi imademyfirstcomputer,
Glad you got your system working right. Yeah, post a picture of your rig in the "Post a pic of YOUR computer's innards" thread in the General Discussion Forum, it'll be cool to see what it looks like. Might as well try to keep that thread growing. Post a pic of your computer's innards Cricket
