yet another DVD problem...

Hi! I got a problem with DVD playback...

A while ago, I installed a DVD drive on my computer. It's a Pioneer drive. My video card is a Radeon, so I don't need a decoder card; the Radeon has hardware decoding. The DVD viewer I use is the ATI DVD player. So, I installed the drive, rented a DVD, tested it, and it played perfectly (well, one or two bugs, but nothin bad). I had DirectX 8.1b and the latest drivers installed.

So, a week after that, one of my hdds went bad, and I needed to reformat and reinstall Windows. Reinstall everything. I have now DirectX 8.0 and the original drivers that came on the installation cd of the Radeon.

So, yesterday, I bought the same dvd I rented. I put it in the drive, and now I notice a really annoying green line in the lower black border (it's widescreen version). It's there in most of the chapters of the DVD, but not all. I saw this green line ONCE before, when I first played the rented dvd, and it lasted for not even a second. Now, however, it's almost constant. So, annoyed, I think the problem is that I don't have DirectX 8.1b installed, nor do I have the latest drivers. I download them, install DirectX, uninstall the old drivers, install the new drivers, reboot, etc.

Far from helping, it just causes even more problems! Now, I don't get any image hen I play the DVD, only large horizontal green, pink and white lines! I do get sound, though. But, after 4 or 5 seconds of playback, the DVD freezes, and I must ctrl-alt-del to close it.

What's causing the problem? According to the ATI Compatibility Check Test, all is well. Moreover, the DVD drive read Cds perfectly, so it is obviously functionning. Also, I'm 99.9% positive that all the settings are the same as the ones before I reinstalled Windows. What's my problem, and how do I solve it?

Thanks!

I had a similar problem and I used this solution from Jason Padgett and it worked just fine.
I know it sounds weird but if you've ever reformatted and reinstalled windows you know that strange things can happen.

pam 123,

thanks for the tip, but unfortunately, it didn't work.

Oh, and I forgot to mention this: normally when the DVD starts, I get the "Rating Screen". Now, I only get a Black screen. Then, when the movie starts, the coloured lines appear.

It sounds like you may need system file checker to find out if something else is wrong. Have you tried it?

It does exactly as stated, and can fix files for you too (in most circumstances).

However, I haven't ever needed one and the only one I know of was included with Win98. (actually I could have used it when I had WinME but they took it out of the OS, that OS completely sucked ina every way for me = unstable and had none of the useful tools to fix itself that 98 had )

Install the latest ATI drivers - THEN reinstall DirectX 8.1 - in that sequence.

If you got the install sequence wrong that could account for your problem, thanks glc.
System File Checker is included in 98se, which your signature says you're running. You can find it as follows:
Start button>program> accessories> system tools> system information.
Click tools and choose system file checker from the menu.
Make sure the scan for altered files button is checked and choose start.
Windows 98 checks itself over and if it finds a problem it'll ask you for the cd so it can make repairs, just follow the on screen instructions.

GLC, thanks for the solution, but the problem is, the latest ATI drivers need DirectX 8.1 to be installed.

Then install DX 8.1. Then the ATi drivers. Then reinstall DX 8.1 again. Glc suggests this coz drivers installations can mess DX sometimes.

can he just run the DxDiagnostic tests, and if he passes all of them, then DX8.1 wouldn't need to be messed with, right?

Anyway, you can't really uninstall DX. so you might as well just try what glc was saying.

arrghhhhhhhhh....

As you can guess, it didn't work...
Do you think my DVD drive is acting up (that would be frustrating, since it's new) or it's really software related?

Another, less important question, ut still slightly relevant to the subject: when I try to eject the DVD from the drive by pressing the eject button, it takes an awful lot of time. Sometimes, it doesn't even work. It works great when I go in Windows Explorer, select the drive, and click on "eject."

Anyways, thank you all for your help...

Try enabling DMA for the drive if it is supported.

Insert the DVD, open Windows Explorer and look what's inside.

If there are the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders and the *.vob *.bup and *.ifo files inside the VIDEO_TS folder, then the DVD drive can read the DVD and is not the problem.

You can download the trials of PowerDVD and WinDVD and see if they work. It's probably a software issue.

pstj, you're gonna hate this, but in your place I'd reformat and start from scratch being very careful with the order in which I installed things and checking to see that everything was installed correctly ( see that windows multimedia installs completely ).
If you burn the latest DirectX to cd you can install it and follow up with the latest ati drivers as glc suggested.
Also check see if all your cabels, cards, etc., are secure.
If it still doesn't work, then I'd wonder about the drive.

also, make sure you are indeed using the hardware decoder, and not software decoder that comes with the drive. that might be causing a conflict.

RJ, when I put the DVD in the Drive, I can only see a Video_ts folder. All the files type you mentionned are there. But, I do not see any Sound_TS folder. However, when I play the dvd, I do get sound. I'm confused. Maybe it's the DVD which I bought that is bad??? It's a 2-Discs set, and neither discs show a Sount_TS folder...

Oh yeah, and DMA is enabled. And it worked fine last time. But there is a "Disconnect" setting that is enable too... hmmmm... could this be the problem? (never heard of this setting).

Also, when I click on "properties," it tells me the disc is 4.20 gb full. When I click on the Video_TS folder, it tells me that it is 4.20 gb big. So, apparently the Sound_TS folder is not detected... dammit. Is there something I can do? It was working fine...

Homer15, the drive didn't come with any software (it's OEM). The only decoder I have IS hardware.

pam123, yeah, the more I think about it, the more I realize I might have to reinstall. grrrr......

Anyways, thanks for the support...

Ok, I just downloaded the Trial version of Power DVD, and all works good. I have picture, I have sound, I have everything. And PowerDVD is a very nice little program...

EDIT: ALL IS NOT SO WELL. The problem occurs when I switch from Software decoding to Hardware decoding... In Hardware decoding, I get the lines I was talking about... no picture, but sound. SO, the problem is either the driver, or the card itself... What do you think?

anyways, I still don't understand why I don't have a Sound_TS folder...

Oh, and I'm amazed that my PII 350 is able to play perfectly a DVD using software decoding...

Although any DVD should have the AUDIO_TS folder for higher compatibility with standalones, there are indeed DVDs that don't have. Don't worry about it, as PC drives read everything.

So when you use "Use Hardware acceleration" with PowerDVD then you get the problem, too ?
Maybe a driver problem, but I can't say for sure.

yeah, as I said, I detected the problem by switching from Software to Hardware in Power DVD. Kind off annoying... anyways, glad to know my DVD is normal, and that my drive is ok. Probably just a driver issue...

hmmmm.... Reinstall, here I come!
