Angry Aarrgggh. Trying to set up sound card on IRQ7..

I have been trying for days to set-up my sound card on a different IRQ from my video card. My GeForce 3 Ti 500 says I should have it on IRQ 11 all by itself. My sound card - Audigy Xgamer- was in PCI slot 2 and was defaulting to IRQ 11, so I wen tinto BIOS and changed it to IRQ 7 - but when I restarted my video card was also now on IRQ7! So I switched PCI slot 2 back to auto, changed my sound card to PCI slot 3 and changed it to IRQ7. When I restarted my video was on IRQ11 and my sound on IRQ7 - great. But then I had to reinstall the software for the sound card - but when I finish it says that the card is not installed properly. I rechecked (3x) that the card itself is seated properly in the slot. So all I can surmise is that creative cd cannot properly install the card when it's in slot 3. Oh, and Windows (I'm on 98SE) also detects new hardware called "PCI Input Controller" and wants drivers for it also. What is that all about?????

Aany suggestions????

btw, I need to have the two devices on seperate IRQs because it is causing problems with a Linux install and with playing Morrowind.

That creative card should be looking for IRQ 5 or at least it seems all that I have installed. Is that video card AGP or PCI? If you are running out of IRQ's then disable your serial ports via the bios assuming you are not using them and hopefully something else can use those leaving a seperate IRQ for your sound card. HTH

the vid card is AGP. I'll try IRQ 5 - but I wonder if the software will install the card correctly then???

Just remember that you cannot install a card on the first PCI slot beacuse It shares with the AGP slot. The input PCI controller it detects is the sound card. I would set the port to AUTO and the let the software choose the IRQ. If you do not mind what are you IRQ assignments right now?

If you have no cards in certain pci slots, set that slot's irq to NA if you can. Also look in the mobo manual and see if there is a slot that shares with nothing. Or if two slots share and one of those same slots is empty, you will be ok, you should be able to use one of those slots and get the irq of choice. If you do not use comms, lpt, and usb, disable them in bios.

Hi RudeDog,

If you aren't using the serial ports, disable them in BIOS to free up those IRQ's.

Do you have ACPI enabled in BIOS?

Cricket, I can find no place in the BIOS to disable ACPI... I have disabled a couple ports since I don't use them. Do you think if I choose another IRQ for slot3 that the card will then "install properly"?

IRQ 7 is reserved for your printer, soundcards like irq 5.
Go into bios and change PNP OS to no,assign irq 5 to the slot your soundcard is in.
Disable com 1 and 2 in bios.
What OS are you using?

thanks Alfie, I'll try that. I'm using Win98SE... (btw, my network card is using IRQ5, but I'll try to change that too).

Swap the cards around and/or assign available IRQS to the respective slots.
If you could list your current IRQ setup,it would help.

OK, I've changed the assigned IRQ for my sound card to IRQ5. I think averything is going to work - except that I can't "properly" install the software and drivers from the CD. I keep getting a message about a "PCI Input Controller" being detected as new hardware (in addition to my sound card), and I am being asked for drivers for this 'device'. What is it talking about? I get this both before and after using the install cd - and then I get the message that my sound card is not installed properly. I also checked 3 times to see that the card is seated properly in the slot. So I guess I need drivers for the "PCI Input Controller". Can anyone help?

Thanks.
