i recently upgraded to P166 from a 486 via ebay. prob is no docs and mouse isn't being recognized. before i purchase a seperate i/o card, is there perhaps some advice on some things i should check. maybe like jumpers or such? system says mb has a 82371ab/eb pci controller. on the mb is stamped sp-586 tb rev a. it's a serial mouse and i tried both ports. i promise to come into the 90's then 00's as soon as i can afford it. if i have no luck with ports then will a seperate i/o card override the mb or do i need to know some jumper settings? any place on web where i might find specs on mb? thanks to any help offered!!!!!!!!!

http://www.motherboards.org Download a program called CTBios. It will open a DOS window that should tell you everything you need to know.

Also, did you check in BIOS to make sure that Com port 1 is enabled? (Actually that should have been my first suggestion, but it is always good to know who made your MB anyway!)

Did the motherboard come with ribbon cables for the ports? There are several types of those and they are not necessarily compatible. Also check the obvious - they can be hooked up backwards - the red stripe goes toward Pin 1.
