Good evening to everyone! My cousin is starting college in a few weeks and is looking to purchase a laptop. She will be studing to be a Vet, although right now she has to take all the basic classes (history, Chemistry, calculus). To be honest, it has been awhile since I looked into anything hardware so I was wondering if I could get some suggestions for her. Her budget is $1800, but being a college student, I would like her to get the best deal she can.
Thank you in advance. Mel! |

I just got a Dell 4150 for $1400, 1.6ghz P4M, 256ram, 30gig HDD, 24xCD-RW, 14" screen, I added a floppy and the cd-rw was a free upgrade but dell seems to offer this every 2 weeks anyway so just wait for the next offer if she wants cd-rw. Dells warranty is excellent and they even offer accidental damage coverage for 3 years for $300 which would still be under $1800. Good luck and remember, Dells new offers are released on Thursdays.

Toshiba makes good laptops too, but if Dell is a bit cheaper, you probably want to go for that.

I have helped two college students purchase Dell laptops (an 8260 and a 4250). Got good deals on both. Helped another get a Fujitsu. I own one and love it. Admittedly, the warrenty isn't as good, but the customer support and hardware features are excellent. You may want to check them out along with Dell.

Hi Tuf,
Messed up the numbers. It's the 8200 and the 2650 (both Inspirons). The 8200 is Dell's highest-end Inspiron. Lots of features including a 15" screen and wireless networking. The 2650 is the next to lowest-end Dell. Less bells and whistles, but still fairly powerful nontheless. Interestingly enough, both are on special at Dell's website, currently. You also may want to check out Fujitsu's A or C Series. Comparable price, specs are comparable or better. Hope this helps. |

Those Dells with 15" screens should make her classmates jealous.
Dells have excellent warranties & win stress test marathons in PC Mag year after year. Since you are buying for a student, be sure to check out the special discounts offered to full-time students! Can save major dollars on top-of-the-line equipment. You'll need to provide some info on the college being attended, etc, perhaps a student #. Software is usually discounted for students/teachers also. . . . Gary |

my 2 cents: get a used one one ebay for a few hundred bucks. I'm a college student and I've got a p133 ibm (760xl) that works just fine and I'm starting my fourth year soon (finance major). if she's like most college students just starting out, she'll need her extra money a lot more than extra power in a laptop.

If your in the market for any sort of PC or Laptop, Dell is the way to go. Many a time I've called up Dell with a question and their courtious customer support has walked me through. Once, when I was still inexperienced, I was on the line for 6 hours with one of their people as she determined it was time for a Windows reinstall and then walked me though step by step on how to go about this. She stayed with me until I had the Windows desktop again, and was never once nasty. A++ to these guys.
P.S. No, I don't work for Dell. |

Dell does have pretty decent support most of the time. I do recommend if you are buying a notebook that will be used daily to avoid the consumer or value oriented models. I think it wiser to purchase a refurbed recent or current model from IBM or Dell than to buy one of the cheaper ones, Dell included. If you are going to carry the notebook around alot I would choose something along the lines of a Dell 4100 or an IBM T series. They are a good combination of power, features and portability. The larger ones are also good computers but take up alot of room in your bag and are heavy.
