Please help, having trouble with new build.

My brother and my Dad just recently ordered parts for a new computer. The build is complete, and we're having trouble with the drivers for the video card. The system specs are...

Mobo: A7N266-C
RAM: 512 megs Crucial
Processor: AthlonXP 1800+
Video Card: Asus V8240 GeForce 4 Ti4200
HDD: IBM 40 Gig 7200 RPM
Operating System: Windows XP Professional

Ok, the system booted up fine and XP was installed. We tried to install the video card drivers off the CD provided with the card, but there was an error message regarding Windows logo testing. It gave the option to quit setup or to continue anyway, and at the time, we quit setup. From here we tried the latest Nvidia drivers off of nvidia.com and had some trouble. After the installation of the drivers (which seemingly went fine) the system would not fully boot up after the required restart after installation of the drivers. After the WindowsXP Professional logo came up, the monitor would turn black, instead of booting into the desktop. It would stay this way forever until we restarted the computer.

When restarting from this black screen, we were prompted to start Windows regularly, or load from last previous working setup, or load Windows into a few different flavors of safe mode. If we picked load Windows regularly, we would end up having the same black screen as we did previously. So we were forced to pick the "last previous working setup." In being forced to do so, the drivers that we had previously installed were not installed anymore. Also, in device manager, the video card was not recognized for what it was after the reboots that we had to do, it was only recognized as "VGA compatible." Device manager would not even have a monitor tab either after the reboots. We went through this same process with pretty much any Nvidia driver we could get our hands on all the way back to the 21.83 detonators, and we are still having no luck.

Also, after all of this, I went back and tried the drivers off of the CD, and when I was prompted with the error about the Logo testing, I chose to go ahead with the install anyway. We ran into the same problems as we did with all the other drivers.

To test to see if it was a monitor issue, I took my monitor and hooked it up to his computer, and still had the same problems. All this was done on a fresh format of Windows XP as it is a new build.

If anyone can provide any help or answers we'd greatly appreciate it, and if you need me to provide more information about anything dealing with the computer's specs then I'd be glad to do so.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Necron,

When you installed other drivers, did you remove the old drivers first before trying to install the new ones? Some cards have to have the old ones totally deleted before the new ones can be installed. Try deleting the old ones, rebooting to let WinXP find the "new" hardware, and then install the drivers that came with the video card. Try just disregarding the "logo problems" warning this time. My ATI card said the same thing but I went ahead and loaded anyway and it works fine. HTH

No, I didn't try that, but it still should've worked with the first set of drivers we tried, which were the latest ones straight off the Nvidia website. But next time we do a fresh install of XP, I'll try moving forward with the straight install of the drivers off of the CD. He's loading on 98SE on there right now to see if he gets the same problems. I'm still recommending to him, though, to be able to run XP at all costs, because I feel it's far superior to 98SE in terms of stability.

Thanks for the help.
