Have you checked the post "Modem--No dial tone selected" within this forum?

Do you have voice mail on your line? If you do, check your messages and clear them and try again. The "stutter" dial tone which indicates messages waiting will fool the modem into thinking there is no dial tone.

Test the line with a phone.. maybe the connection is bad. If you don't have an available phone, you can stick your tongue in the socket... if it shocks you good, its live.

madthumbs - give yavben YOUR tongue to check it with!

The line worked before shutting down the PC, so we have to "assume" the line works. Never hurts to test it though - with a *phone*!

1. Which com port is your mouse on?

2. Please post the resources (IRQ and I/O address) your com ports and modem are using.

I have experienced the same problem today but sligtly quirky. Installed Windows Me on a machine, got the modem to work fine ( an elsa microlink internet 56k external ) set up web access, e-mail etc. My sister picked the computer up took it home about 20 miles away, plugged it into her phoneline, modem comes up no dial tone!! Have tried everything, leaves my place working fine gets to here place won't work. Changed area dialling code to her code, diagnostics okay on modem? I think the phone line is dodgy, but when we put a telephone on the line to check this we get a dialling code? Would anyone have any ideas?

Get rid of ME and go back to win98.

Just a suggestion.

Find updated windows ME drivers for your modem would probably be the first place to start.

in answer to roberto's post, have taken out the modem from the comp, rebooted into safe mode, removed all com ports and the modem in device manager, rebooted reinstalled com port 1 and com port 2, shutdown the comp,

reinserted the modem into the isa slot, rebooted the comp,

windows recognized the modem and installed it on com 3 and i got dial tone, it would not give me dial tone on com port 2 for some reason..

but as i mentioned now i got no text insertion problem with the mouse..

Remove Com 2 and *disable it in BIOS*, and try to get the modem to install on Com 2.

where would i dissable com 2 in the bios?, when i go into setup in my comp, a 7 yr old compaq, i dont see a mention of com ports, also, since the modem is working fine on com 3, could it not stay there, or is there a conflict with the mouse?

i removed com port 2 via device manager, after reboot, modem shows up on com 2 irq 3 address 2F8, diagnosics does not detect modem, there is no dial tone, i dont readily see where to dissable com port 2 in bios...

Look for com2 on the back of your PC. Is itpart of the Mother board or a card in a slot. There may be jumpers.

there are many jumpers on the mother board is there a way to readily identify the com ports jumpers? are there other com ports i can install the modem to, so that is not in conflict with the mouse, would rather not mess with the mother board if possible...

and finally if i have to deal with the motherboard in order to solve this, is there a step by step tutorial website that would help in identifying where com port 2 is on the motherboard and how to disable it?

there is no discernable model info on the case, this is one of those nobrand put together jobs with the parts, ie cd rom, mother board, hdd, etc from various suppliers, i can see the copyright stamp on the ameribios chip is 1993
so i know its an older model, cyrix, 80mhz..
