An even bigger value from LiteOn

Before we start.... proceed at your own risk! I (or PCMECH) accept no responsibility for damages that may occur

Received through the grapevine this website that provided the info and firmware to upgrade a 40x LiteOn CDRW to a 48x.

I downloaded version VS06. It gave a warning that I must have firmware version ZS2Z first. I only had ZS0K. Well... I held my breath and did it anyway. The BIOS now reports a LTR-48125W as does Nero, Clone CD and Windows. I ran a test write at 40x which completed in 2 minutes 57 seconds. Ran the same data through at 48x and cut 35 seconds off the burn time. My 12x Ricoh CD's max out at 40x, but I had a LiteOn multi-speed CDR that worked fine at 48x.

They list other LiteOn drives that can be upgraded as well, but I repeat do so at your own risk!

They list other drives as well, so you might want to check it out.

Thats pretty cool and very speedy. As a side note I see where Iomega just released a 750mb Zip Drive that is supposed to be as fast as a 50x CDRW.

Well, it's a do at your own risk process to begin with and it's my understanding that the older drives cannot be flashed back to the older firmware. If you try it and it fails, you're stuck with a dead drive. Since the model number doesn't match, I don't think I would try it.

Wow, whilst there was an upgrade available to turn an older drive INTO my drive there was no upgrade available for my drive (LTR-12101B) at the moment

I feel cheated

If you find anything, please let me know

awesome!!!
what does this actually do? does it change something on the drive itself so that if i put the drive in another computer it would run at the faster speed? or what does it change? thanks

Basically it overclocks the chipset of the CD-RW.

It all depends on your Lite-On's chipset. If it's the 32123-S, then it can be taken to 40x -- although I've read that it's a crapshoot if it will work. The process involves using a modified firmware update (totally unsupported by Lite-On) -- some of what I have read would indicate that people toasted their drives by trying to do the upgrade.

Hmm. Now as I recall the 48x has Mt. Ranier support while the 40x doesn't. Is this correct? If so, would flashing a 40x to 48x give the 40x drive Mt. Ranier support?

I may be wrong, but I was under the impression that the 40X did support Mt. Ranier.

It does http://www.liteonit.com/english--p-rw40125.htm

I also have a 32123-S and after doing some research I decided against trying the firmware flash.

Actually I burn at 48X all the time with no errors at all, but the true burn speed is around 32-35X

pretty cool info. i think it's awesome if you bought a 40x a while ago and don't want to buy a new drive, but nowadays the difference between a 40x and a 48x is about $10.
