HDD Coolers?

Are HDD Coolers a necessary item? At present I am running a Maxtor 40 gig, ATA133\100 (100 at present) 72rpm HDD and was told that a HDD cooler was an 'absolute' necessity for any HDD running at 7200. This came from another site, which really isn't known for it's accuracy, so I thought I'd better check before I invest. The 2 HDD coolers I've found are one that attaches to the bottom of the HDD with 2 little fans, and the other one is where the HDD is installed into a large bay and has 3 fans blowing on it (not attached.) If needed, which of the 2 would you guys and gals, think would do the best job? Or is it even necessary? Thanks!!!!!!!

As an after thought, my system temp has never exceeded 29 degrees C, and my cpu temp has never gone above 42C. My cooling consists of one 80mm front, one 80mm rear, one 80mm on top (blow hole) and one 80mm on the case door. I interjected that part just in case you needed to know how much cooling my system has. Thanks again!!!!!

Aslong as your case has decent temps you do not need a hard drive cooler on a PC.

Hi Stubby,

I don't think hard drive coolers are absolutely necessary. But just for your information, I had 3 7200 RPM IBM hard drives die on me and I used hard drive coolers on all of them.

The only time I use a HD cooler is on 10k rpm SCSI drives.

I wouldn't say they are a necessity. You can put one in if you like as it isn't going to hurt. I've only used them so far like GLC said, on SCSI's as they run quite a bit hotter.
