SB Live! not compatible w/ XP
Interestingly enough, the SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 sound card is not officially compatible with Windows XP.
While it is with Windows 2000, it is not with XP, even though they are using the same kernal, right? I figured this out because under the Audigy compatibility listings, Windows XP is listed as "downloadable" while XP isn't listed at all for SB Live! 5.1. Just something I thought I'd throw out there, for anyone that is having major problems with their SB Live! like I am. I know not everyone with XP will have trouble with it, but it something to keep in mind. I just ordered an SB Audigy from Newegg, I hope that will work nicely.

Well, I had to download the XP drivers from the Creative web site and I was set! My sound card is an SB Live! X-Gamer.

I have a Sound Blaster Live Value. I t was in this computer when I did a clean install of Win XP Home. The drivers were loaded during the O/S install and I have not had any problems with it.

I had to update coz at some point a program I didn't even know it existed, crashed. Of course, due to WinXP stability it didn't take the system down with it, but it was annoying. Even with that crash I was able to run my games with no sound probs.
But after I updated the crashes disappeared. (I guess so). Plus, in a training imparted by Creative, they recommended to update our drivers after upgrading to XP. |

Well, since my main PC isn't working right now, I cannot tell you my driver's version. One thing I didn't like about the new ones: some features have been removed, like the Creative Launcher.

I have a SB Live 5.1 on XP... I just let it use the default drivers and update if necessary.. never had any issues.

Don't know if the Creative vs. VIA issues are present in XP too. So far I've had none. (Nor in W98 also).

My Sound Blaster Live (no 5.1) works fine with XP's drivers. It's funny because I do remember a bunch of complaints when XP came out. The first place I go after an install is Windows Update and i do think they have a newer driver.

My SB Live! Platinum works fine on my office system with XP -- I updated the WinXP drivers for the Creative drivers a while ago -- v. 5.12.01.3210 Downloaded then directly from the SB website.

Running WIN XP PRO with Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 caused blue screens and IRQ blue screen errors..so I simply went down to WIN 98 SE and it hasnt given me a blue screen yet, or a crash and the system has been running for 3 months straight..No lockups either..

You went from Win XP Pro BACK to win 98SE because of sound card drivers?
Wouldn't it have been easier just to resolve the sound card issue? |

Well, I'm currently using an SB Live Audigy Plantinum under win2k, with the drivers from included install cd. I really haven' t had any problems. Once in a while (and this is really quite rare), an mp3 will skip for a second. Lately this has happened anymore though. Anyone else ever experienced this?

You are running an nForce mobo, ain't you, wolfie? I've heard they have problems with the PCI slots or something.

I'm with wolfie, I tried both the XP drivers from Creative's site, as well as the ones from Windows Update. Neither worked, neither were better. It's funny, cause it used to work, and now it doesn't, but reinstalling the drivers makes some things work. Then they only work for a short time.
It sounds like the drivers are eating themselves or something, but I JUST reformatted, and I had problems with the sound even before I had accessed the internet. Ya know, the noise from when start up Windows... |

Furius, I have felt your pain the last few days. My SB Live is having some issues with XP as well. I've tried CL's drivers as well as XP's and I still get poor audio performance during some games and overall slower system performance (try to play Jedi Knight II with choppy sound...ughh).
Oddly enough last night, I tried moving to various other PCI slots and everything worked fine, until I rebooted again. Then I was right back to the same problem. I've tried manually switching irq's and this seems to be ineffective... |
