I ordered an Apogee mobo which as you know is made by Chaintech, just now I have done a search on chaintech on these forums and apparently they are garbage.
Should I cancel my order? Are they really that bad? I don't intend to do any overclocking if that helps. ![]() Just thought I'd add, from searching through various sites that have reviewed the board, from the ones I have seen it seems to get good reviews... dunno, it may have good features but is it quality? Perhaps Chaintech have got it right? Am I just being to optimistic?

It may work just fine and serve you well, but there are higher odds of you having a problem with substandard boards. Remember that reviewers are generally provided tested (and possibly tweaked?) boards by the manufacturers, they don't go to the store and buy a random board off the shelf. Reviewers also don't live with the boards for 6 months before writing the review. I do not rely on reviews for judging quality, just features. Quality judgements come from the field from owners and their long-term experiences.

Hi alfielev,
Could be hit-and-miss with a motherboard like that. I have no experience with Chaintech motherboards...but who knows, maybe it's better than a PC Chips motherboard. What CPU will be used with it? Normally, you want to stick with top brand names for the motherboard (since it's the base component that all the other parts are connected to). Brands like ABIT, ASUS, EPoX, MSI, SOYO, SHUTTLE, SOLTEK, TYAN, INTEL, IWILL and AOPEN are the ones to stick with. Cricket

Thanks for the info, the only thing that bothers me is it only has a heatsink on the northbridge not a fan. I had an EPOX board that only used a heatsink and it failed on me.
I'll be using an Athlon 1.2ghz for now until I get an XP version of the cpu. I think I'll keep my trusty Abit board and sd-ram as a standby if this fails on me. I'll let you know how it goes. |

You could always attach a fan to the existing heatsink...replace the existing heatsink with one that comes with a fan (Thermaltake makes a few). I would just put a really big passive heatsink on the northbridge just so I won't have to worry about another fan dying. Cricket

Yeah, I have a 120mm case fan in there for now. As for the heatsink it looks big from the pics I have seen on the net(about 4 times the height of my old epox board).
Maybe a week or so until I get it, when I do I'll let you all know if it is ok or not hehe. |

I'm with glc on this one. My MSI K7T266 Pro-2 got awesome results in reviews and guess what?... it failed. Flaky 3D performance and problems with capacitors. And... MSI is one of the top brands.

"I have done a search on chaintech on these forums and apparently they are garbage." Your research was correct. Trust your instincts. The motherboard is the foundation of your system. If you can change your order, I suggest you do so.

Ron is right the few bucks you save on a cheap motherboard will haunt you as long as you own the system. Longer if you give/sell it to a friend.

Manufacturers seem to run in cycles - but Chaintech is one of the ones that hasn't seemed to have an "up" cycle. I remember a couple of years ago Asus was even putting some trash out there - look at the CUBX with the CMD controller, the P3C with the SDRAM converter, and the original A7V for examples of that. Note that all 3 boards initially reviewed VERY well.
Heck - on current boards - the ECS K7S5A gets great reviews - but it's not a reliable board at ALL. |

I'll work with it, see what it chucks out.
I say that but it may actually take a few days to arrive. (all the other components are good).
