Question

Hi,
I am looking into upgrading the old rocket from a P3 550 slot1 to P3 800.

My local computer store finds it difficult to get slot1 P3 800s but have a lot of the 800 'flipchips'.

Current specs:

Mobo: SOYO SY6BA+IV.
Chipset: Intel 440BX.
CPU: P3 550 @ 550-632Mhz (it's not always o/ced!)
192Mb Kingston PC100 RAM.

I not too hot on the old 'this CPU runs at this bus speed' thing so....

1) What are the bus speeds for a P3 800 in all its' forms......slot1 and flipchip?

2) Do I get the sloket with the flipchip. If not then what sloket should I get?

3) Any other tips that you guys may have .

I should probably know a lot of this stuff already....hanging around here etc....but it's not something I think about everyday...know what I mean?

I guess I'd like to know the pros and cons of the P3 800 slot1 and flipchip.....and which would be best for me. I should have just said this in the first place!! LOL.

Any advice would be great from you guys/gals!

The PIII 800 comes in both slot1 and flipchip socket 370. It also comes in bus speeds of 100mhz and 133mhz. The slocket does not come with the processor. For the board you have I would use the 100mhz version. Soyo makes a slocket part # SY-370 and might be available where you bought your board. MSI makes probably the best slocket for overclocking. I have a Soyo 6BA+100 and am using the same setup. Depending on the cooler you use you may lose the use of one of your DIMM sockets.

Thumbs up

Hi JCH,
Thanks for the reply. Well you've got the mobo that I want..LOL. I know that I can't use the 133 bus P3 800....or probably shouldn't.

Have you a P3 800? Is that what you said? About heatsinks etc....I'm not a mad o/cer so a stock heatsink will do me just fine But I would like to try for the 1GHz mark!

I don't want to loose my DIMM sockets. Three are full and I'm going to fill the fourth. I guess I could use 128Mb DIMMs instead of the 64s....

Any more info from anyone..?

Thanks JCH!

Hi Fredwest.
I currently have 2 of these boards. One has a PIII700 and one has a PIII 800. Both are currently on the Soyo slocket and have stock fans. I dont overclock. If you use some of the large coolers, they are so tall that they could block the closet DIMM slot to the processor. No problem with a normal size fan though. If you consider this board immediately download the latest bios and install it. The highpoint controller did not work at all with my IBM ATA100 drives. I called Soyo tech support and they sent me a beta bios to try. It has now been released and is on the website. Other than the initial fight with the hard drives, this board is great!

Hello Fredwest,
Well, I couldn`t resist and bought a PIII-800E. The only thing available at the time was a "flip-chip". Besides availability, the "flip-chip" priced 30 bucks lower and so I jumped on a deal for 210.00 for the 800E.
I fired the chip up a stock speed just to make sure it was of sound mind and pins. Then (of course), I started playing with bus speed. At 112mhz FSB, the chip posted and ran flawlessly at about 895mhz and didn`t run any hotter then normal. I powered down and re-jumpered to 124mhz and it posted up at 995mhz. It ran quite stable but acted "wrong" but nothing I can put my finger on, it just felt like it was fighting itself. So....I crossed my fingers and jumpered this puppy at 133mhz FSB and it posted and ran at 1060+. At 133mhz on my ASUS board, the PCI clock was auto set to 33.xmhz and at 124mhz it set to 36.xx mhz. While the system is now running at 1060+MHZ, it acts a tad strange and I on rare occasion have a lock-up. The chip heats up some but nothing extreme. I cant as yet say its stable, but it is workable. Friends havn`t been quite so lucky as their systems won`t run in excess of about 895mhz (112FSB).
Then other friends tryed the 850 PIII which was a fair bit more expensive but overclocked more redily. Maybe you might consider this. Be forwarned that the cost of the 850 was 60.00 higher then the 800 and the 850 does have a differing internal step code then that of the 800.
I would suggest that the 850 was intended for the 133mhz FSB as they tend to be difficult to locate for the 100mhz bus.
Sooo....it may be the 700E or so for "bang for buck" as most post and run in excess of 850mhz. These are cheaper and do well while further study on the 800mhz "E".

Hi guys,
Thanks JCH and Toaster for that very interesting information. I may also now look into the P3 700. I hadn't considered it before. Now I'll see if I can get one of these CPUs....LOL.

Again, thanks alot guys .
