CF card reader problems with Win98

Hi everyone, I just got a new camera that takes a compact flash card. I have bought 3 differant card readers and none of them work. I have an early version of WIN98. When I loaded these readers (2-3 times each) they would come up as a drive on "my computer" & when I would click on them it would just freeze up my computer! I have went to all sites to see if there are any driver updates but to no avail. I'm at a loss. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Phil.

Try disabling your background antivirus. Do you have Adaptec/Roxio CD burning software installed? If so, check this out.

SDDR-31 USB CompactFlash ImageMate - Post Installation: I've installed my ImageMate and it's connected to my computer in Windows 98. Why is my system locking up and giving me the blue screen?

Symptoms:
I've installed drivers for the ImageMate CompactFlash USB (model SDDR-31) and connected it to my computer, but my system locks up and a blue screen appears with the message: " A fatal exception OE has occurred at 0028:C16ED46E in module VXD APIX(01)...The application will be terminated" (Or it immediately reboots) What's going on?

Affects:
SanDisk products: SDDR-31
Operating systems: Microsoft Windows 98
Hardware platform: All legacy PCs

Cause:
You probably have Adaptec(R) Easy CD Creator(TM) version 3.5, 4.0 or 4.1 installed on your system. This software probably came with your Iomega(R), HP(R), or other branded CD RW drive.
The Easy CD Creator program uses certain APIX.vxd functions that are also incorporated into Windows 98. This alone is not a problem. However, when CD Creator is installed, it renames Microsoft's APIX files. When these files are renamed, compatibility issues arise between CD Creator and other peripherals (such as ImageMate) that use the APIX functions. To rectify the problem, please follow the instructions below

Solution:

For Easy CD creator 3.5 and earlier or Direct CD 2.5d:
Upgrade to 3.5c
Apply the floppy107.exe patch from ROXIO (see bottom of page)
You will find the update to 3.5c and the floppy107.exe towards the bottom of the page.
Once you have upgraded and run the patch, please restart the machine and then plug the ImageMate in, you should now be on-line.

For Easy CD creator 4.0 and 4.01:
Upgrade to 4.02
Then run the ren_apix.bat linked at the bottom of the page.
This file will replace the Adaptec/ROXIO version of the APIX.vxd , wnaspi32.dll and wnaspi32.adp with the Windows versions.
If you are still experiencing issues, right click on the file APIX.vxd on your system and make sure it says Microsoft on the version tab. If it does not you can extract the correct Microsoft version of each from the Win98 cd in the win98_53.cab

For Easy CD creator 4.03 and higher:
You just need to apply the Ren_apix.bat at the bottom of the page

If you have applied the patch and you have the correct version of the files, you may need to reload the driver. Right click on “my computer?go to properties and then device manager. At the bottom under Universal serial bus controllers you will see an entry for the ImageMate with a yellow exclamation next to it. Highlight the ImageMate entry and choose remove. Then choose refresh. It should now be properly loaded.

(nice post, glc!)

Hi Sixpk,

Just curious, is this a 98, or 98 SE box?? I'm assume you mean a straight 98 (no SE). My box is an 98 SE box, and I've had a couple readers, currently using the $31 6-n-1 no-name reader from Newegg.com, and haven't had any problems.

I was going to say -- Win98fe does not offer full USB support -- Win98se does. There was your problem (assuming like most card readers and digital cameras you were hooking them up via USB).

Glad you got the problem solved.
