I really like the Sony Trinitron 19" 420GS (something like that)...but it supports 1600x1200 @ 85hz...and that's what I would require from a new monitor

Viewsonic has some REALLY good prices...I've heard they're good monitors, but I've never owned one.

Could you post your price range? If you want a cheap one, you can get a CTX PL-9 at Sam's Club for $150. I'm running one here @ 1280x1024 32 bit color 85 Hz and it looks fine, no geometry problems.

The only problem I've seen with the CTX's from Sam's is a weak cable. After a few bumps, it has a tendency to start turning the screen pink. This has happened on all 3 of the 19"ers that my brother has gotten from them.

So if you have a tendency to move your hardware around a lot, i would recommend something other than the CTX.

That price range will get you a premium monitor in the Iiyama and Sony class. No need to talk cheapies now - look at reviews for top performance and quality. Decide whether you want a traditional shadow mask or a "Trinitron" type display. Make your final decision by going to a store and actually looking at displays. A lot of people around here swear by Samsung - they are excellent monitors for the price, but their support and customer service is abysmal and in your price range you can do better. It *is* hard to go wrong with Viewsonic - they have always made a good CRT product and support it well, and you don't see too many of them dying before their time.

I wish I had $500 to spend on a monitor - I would get a 17 inch LCD, probably a KDS RAD-7.

I agree Glc if you have around $500 I'd look at an LCD monitor. I like my KDS RAD-7C. I won't be going back to a CRT.
