PS/2 Mouse problem

I have an ATX powered Intel Chipset (I don't know the chipset no.) based motherboard with a PII processor with onboard ports. Keyboard & mouse are PS/2. The mouse has been working fine ever since I bought the PC but recently the PS/2 mouse has stopped working. I tried changing the mouse but it won't detect the mouse. Can anyone help me out? I have plugged in a serial mouse and is working fine. Another problem is that when I try to shut down the PC, it restarts instead of shutting down. I have Win98 installed.

Thanks,
Freewilly.

Your PS/2 port may be bad - if a serial mouse works, use it - or try a USB mouse.

Yep. I had a PS/2 port go bad on me after a hard night of Unreal Tournament (not sure why it died). At any rate I bought a USB mouse and it has worked fine ever since. I would ditch the serial mouse and go USB until you buy another MB.

heh that reminds me of my old Cyrix PR 200's mobo, some ali chipset don't remeber its exact num, but it fried atleast 4 Serial mice, till i gave up on it and bought a USB 2-port card, and got a cheap usb mouse for it way back, jus about when usb was debuted..... and it really killedem good, they never worked in another pc again, those serial mice. Your ps/2 port may be doing to the same.... forsake it also wondering why i din't get a Ps/2 mouse??? it was a AT mobo, so only at Keyboard, and no mouse ports.
