I'm building a computer for my high school student council and I'm running into some red tape. I want to put a burner on the network but the principle doesn't like that idea. I'm trying to convince him to let me do it and just have sercurity and passwords on the burner but he won't allow it. He insists on getting a much slower and more expensive external burner. Now don't get me wrong, he has good reason to want that but I think I might have another solution.
I'm looking for a case that has a sturdy door that can close and be locked. I want to be able to lock the burner in and put his worries to rest. I've looked at some Enermax entry level server cases but I have no idea how sturdy the doors are. Can someone recommend a good one? If anyone has any other ideas on how to prevent illegal activities with the burner please tell, I really want to avoid an external burner. |

I don't know if your high school has a metal shop. If they do it would be simple for them to whip you up something to go across the front of the computer that could be locked.

The chieftec dragon cases have a locking door and side panel. They also look pretty cool too! Check it out at http://www.chieftec.com/products/Workcolor/ColorTX.htm
I can't testify to the securtiy yet, but I shall be cuilding a machine using this case in a week or so... let me know if you can wait that long. Certainly this case has had very good reviews |

That, or a similar one seems to be my only option. That could be fine provided the door is decent.

Ive got an antec 1040(pretty much the same as that chieftec case). The doors pretty flexible so I suppose if someone was willing to pry it off, it wouldnt be too hard to get past.

I don't think you would need anything to serious. As long as it wouldn't be possible for a person to easily jimmy the door open, than I don't see someone being so hardup to burn a CD by breaking the door.

This might be totally off, but, I am assuming that the burner is desired IN the case to prevent theft. A lot of cases have a way to lock the access panel to get IN to the case, what if we installed the burner and then removed the ribbon cable and lock the case shut?
I know this would require reopening it to use the burner and would require disconnecting it again, but is this an option? Anyone please feel free to shoot this down as necessary. |

You might not need a hardware solution at all. What operating system are you using? I know that with Windows 95/98 you can make some simple changes to the registry that can allow you to hide all your drives and turn off autoplay. You could do that for your cdrw drive and just turn it back on whenever you need it. If you want I can give you links to the sites that have the information. Its just a matter of copying and pasting the text in to notepad, saving it with a .reg extension and double clicking it.

I say get the external CD burner and lock it up when your done.
a new case will cost you, and I have a locking case the door on it is really cheap plastic and will only keep out the HONEST people. |

Looks like we are going for the external burner after all. The school is going to cover the extra cost, since they're the ones pushing for it.
Another solution the tech sugested was to dissable it in the BIOS and password protect it. |
