Same thing I have - download the Intellipoint software from www.microsoft.com/hardware and tell it in the setup that you have a "Intellimouse Optical".

i tried it and guess what!? an error!
[error 1101.error reading from file c:\windows\temp\_isc292\1033.MST. verify that the file exists and that you can access it.] i have a converter on the mouse (USB -> PS/2) would this make a difference? i am on windows 98 and the version is 4.1 (for the MS drivers intellipoint) should i remove all existing mouse drivers? |

Yes, uninstall all mouse drivers and go back to the standard PS/2 port mouse driver. Delete all the files and folders in c:\windows\temp and try again. If you get the same error, redownload the software, your download may be corrupt.

Why not just plug the mouse into the PS/2 port and spare yourself all the trouble?
I have an optical IntelliMouse and have it attached to the PS/2 port. And never installed the software, it only adds innecesary load to Windows. Oh, OK, perhaps the side buttons won't work this way. Have you checked if they work if you are using the PS/2 port?

What do you mean you don't "have USB"? You need it in order for anything USB to work.
What do you mean the VIA USB drivers "still don't have the USB controller"? When you hit WinKey+Break, do you see any yellow marks? |

hmm...yellow marks?
i don't have any USB only stuff so it hasn't been an issue. now it seems to be! when i installed the software side of my mobo (the chipset driver) i don't think i installed the USB driver (or it didn't work) when i tried re-installing it, it installed ok but can't find the mouse. |

The USB drivers are independent of the main VIA 4in1 drivers, and thus they need to be installed separately.
Do the USB controlers are displayed in System Properties? |

i know the USB drivers are independant - my system wouldn't be working to well if the VIA 4in1 drivers weren't installed!
what exactly do you mean in the Sys Properties? do you mean the device manager? they don't appear anywhere, in any of the tabs. |

You may not have the USB turned on in the BIOS.
Download the Intellipoint software again - and shut down everything but explorer and systray before you install it. |
