HELP - RAID & my NEW COMPUTER
Hello everyone. I just spent the day assembling my first computer. Surprisingly it seems to work but for some reason I cannot get the system to recognize my raid array (which the bios and raid setup utility seems to recognize easily) when trying to boot Windows XP. It says there is no hard drive. Any suggestions would be helpful as I am at something of a loss.

How do you have the drives set up? On one IDE line, or on seperate ones?
If they are on the same one, try putting them on seperate lines, so each drive has its own IDE connector.

HELP with NEW COMPUTER HARD DRIVE NOT RECOGINIZED
Yes, I tried to set it up just as the online guides suggested. I am using an ASUS A7V333 motherboard with a promise raid controller. The promise raid jumper is set to on. I have each hard drive attached to a different IDE cable, one attached to the Promise IDE Primary and one to the Promise IDE Secondary. Both are set as master, as the instructions indicate. I also have a DVD drive attached to the Primiary IDE and set as master. There are no slave systems and I don't have a floppy drive installed. When the system boots it recognizes one Raid array using two drives. There is no mention of the promise system in the bios though. I am trying to boot up windows XP pro using the XP System CD from a friends brand new Gatway System. It gets to the point where it asks to set up windows then says that it cannot continue because there are no hard drives. I just don't get it.

See if this article helps out:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q314343 It's about basic disks vs. dynamic disks in WindowsXP. . . . Gary [p.s. ...I wouldn't use a Gateway XP disk on a system that isn't a Gateway] |

I read the article and was completely confused. What I really need is a boot disk so that I can format the drive. I really think it is all just as simple as that. It isn't formatted. However, I have no IDEA how to get a boot dist. Can anyone help me?

If you boot from your Windows Xp disk, that should offer to format the disks for you as part of the installation. The GateWay disk is of no use to you as it is customized for the Gateway model it came with.
In the article, they mention that RAID 5 can't be done in WinXP Home edition. Are you using Home or Pro? Are you interested in mirroring or striping? . . . Gary |

The disk is for Windows XP Professional. I am interested in striping. Do you think I should just go and buy Window XP?

Windows XP Professional - I am using the Gateway Professional Edition of this product on my non gateway home built computer. It seems to work up to the point where it doesn't recognize the hard drive. What can I do about this? I really don't want to spend 300 dollars to buy this software if the problem is in fact something in my set up or some simple think like the fact that i need to dos disk to format the drive as it suggests in the manuel.

Yes, because you're going to need to activate XP. To do that you need to get yourself a disk of your own. If you have a previous version of Windows, get the upgrade edition at a substantial discount (seems like it's around $170 for the full "Pro" edition). Not sure if there are student discounts . . . (like there are for the "Office" programs). Poke around on the Microsoft site for discounts & such.
I looked over a few things, and you should be able to do RAID 0 with XP Pro. RAID 0 is the striped version. RAID 1 is a mirroring. (any higher type of RAID requires more than 2 drives). . . The step you were stuck on in your 1st try was just the one you mention: you were at the step at which you need to format the drives. The drives may have come with software that will do that for you. I prefer to let WinXP do it, but I suppose if your manufacturer's disk can do XP compatible NTFS, that might do. Post again if none of this helps . . . Gary [p.s. I've just added a correction - to stripe it turns out you do need WinXP Pro (at first I thought HomeEd would work). . . at least that's what the Microsoft XP site says.] Last edited by GaryRouth; 10-05-2002 at 10:49 PM. |

You can't use a Gateway product recovery CD on a homebuilt system, physically or legally.
