Canon S300 USB printer
I recently bought a Canon S300 USB, and I can't get it to function reliably. My system is a PIII/866 running Windows 2000 Professional. For USB, it's version 1.0, and I hace installed a PCI extension card with four additional ports.
I managed to get the printer to print once when I first hooked it up, but then I connected my JVC digital camera (also USB). Initially, the camera wouldn't work, but I restarted and it did. However, the printer stopped operating at this point. I have not been able to get it to work again. I can still access the camera, but the printer just makes an occasional noise (sounds like it is trying to move the print head, but very briefly). After a couple minutes, the driver software tells me the printer is not responding. When I try to get Win2K to reacquire the printer, the PC goes nuts, telling me I have unsafely removed my modem, sound card, and hard disk controller. A retart fixes all that, but it does reinstall the modem (I have to turn the sound off again each time - it doesn't ask me for input when it soes this). The rest of my USB stuff: 1. Microsoft Internet Pro keyboard (which also has two USB ports, which I have tried on the printer, with the same result as above) 2. Micro Innovations optical mouse 3. EZonics EZ Cam webcam (it doesn't work, but it is connected) 4. JVC digicam - not always plugged into device, usually just sitting on the desk, connected to the computer On the EZ Cam, I get the same type of "unsafe removal" notices as above, but it removes the mouse and the modem. Any tips or advice most appreciated, Chris |

Hi LunaticRex,
The mobo USB is V1.0? The addin card is probably either 1.1 or 2.0. What I would do is to uninstall all USB drivers / devices and remove them in the Device Manager. Shut down. Disable the on-board USB and remove the addin card. Reboot to make sure that the system is working otherwise. Assuming everything is fine at this point, I'd shut down again and install just the addin card, leaving the keyboard ports off for now, and make sure everything works at this point. Then I install the keyboard and test. I'd repeat installing each USB device one-at-a-time and testing the system each time. Don't forget, the normal method to install a USB device is to install the Drivers first, then the Hardware. HTH TwoRails |

You may be drawing too much power from the USB ports with that many devices - try a self-powered hub.
