Today this laptop has been acting weird. It's a Dell Latitude C810 w/ Win2000 Pro. The cooling fans at the back have been running constantly, even when the computer is not being used. Usually it just turns on when the cpu is being for something big like graphics, or when lots of programs are running.
I think the temp sensers might be shot. Any suggestions?

Have they been cleaned thoroughly inside & out? If a family of dust bunnies lives inside, it could keep the fans moving quite a bit....... but that's just the first thing I'd check...
Good luck

mmmm, how would I do that?
Also, this computer is acting pretty strange lately. It is used on a company Novell network, but also goes on the Lan at home. Sometimes surfing the net can make the cpu run up to 100% usage (1.2 GHz). I think this may be because of the networking. Is it possible to have Novell only run manually, not at startup? thanks |

I believe in windows2000 you can choose
Start > Run > type msconfig then choose the Startup tab... perhaps you can uncheck the Novell program from starting up automatically... Is it a company laptop though?... |

Yeah it's a company computer. Otherwise I would clean all the unnecessary stuff off.
Could the fans be cleaned without opening the machine? PS. msconfig doesn't work in 2000

Sorry about the msconfig not working in 2000...
if you cant open the case to clean out the dust bunny family, it really wouldnt do much good to get compressed air and clean it from the outside... it'd only be blowing dust around inside... but, since it's a company computer, i'd definitely ask someone, maybe in the companys' IT dept., if they have a vendor that can do the physical cleaning... no use you paying for it, right?

I was just figuring the fans might be goin because of some configuration problem. I'll suggest getting it cleaned.
Thanks for the advice. |

Have you thoroughly checked it for viruses, trojans, and spyware? Any suspicious processes running in Task Manager? What process seems to be hogging the CPU when it's at 100%? Talk to the IT department about the version of the Novell client - I know with the most recent Client32 you can choose "workstation logon" which is used when you are off the Novell network to log you on locally only.

I've checked for everything that I know. Thing is, there's a lot of software on it that I don't know about, so I don't know if the running processes are ok. Most of them are in the C:\Winnt folder.
How could I check for trojans? |

The Cleaner from moosoft.com is one trojan scanner, there are others. Most dedicated trojan scanners work better than a general purpose antivirus.
