Smile ATC case installation problems

I recently purchased a Gateway 2000 (P5-200) desktop computer at a computer show. This PC has a GenuIntel Pentium II processor and the speed is 350 MHz. A paper bar code tag on the motherboard (MB) has the ID: 4000532. I am running Windows 98 SE.

Since the original computer case did not have expansion capability, I purchased an ATX midi-tower case from a local dealer. The case is: INNO – SA06. I really like the case, and the transfer of components from the old case (which did not have any expansion capability) was relatively easy.

My old Gateway 2000 power supply was a “Power Tronic” switching power supply (WK-6145 DL3 145W max). The number stamped into the back of the old case was: E-3001 REV 00, P5-200.

I have some questions with regard to installing the wiring connectors, that are on my new case, to either the motherboard (MB), or to the power supply. My questions are:

1. On the new case there is a connector labeled “POWER LED”. This lead has two wires: white / green. Can I plug this lead into the MB, where I took the old “POWER LED” connector from ??? The old lead had black / green wires.
I thought the black (BK) was always ground, the white had a + DC charge !!!!

2. On the new case there is a connector labeled “HDD LED”. This lead has two wires: white / red. Can I plug this lead into the MB, where I took the old “HDD LED” connector from ???. The old lead had black / red wires.

3. The new case has a front and rear fan. The leads from the fans have three wires:
white / red / black (for the rear fan), and yellow / red / black (for the front fan). How do I connect these leads ??? Are there male pins on the MB for this ??? Or, can they be connected to the power supply in some way ???

4. The new case has two connector leads for USB. The first connector is green / white / red, with a single white connector. The second connector is green / orange / black, with a single black connector. Where are these connected to on the MB ??? These two USB connectors (from the new case) are labeled “2V USB- / USB+”. I want to be able to use the two USB ports at the front of the case. Can I still use the two USB ports at the rear of the case ???

5. The new case has a white / orange female connector labeled “POWER SW”. Where is this connected to ???

6. The new case has a four-wire combo, with four separate leads that are labeled: “SPK L”, “SPK R”, “G”, and “MIC”. I have a sound card installed into the MB. At the top of the sound card there are three slots labeled: L - R (slot #1), L –R
(slot #2) and I –O (slot #3). How do I connect these wires ???

7. The new case has a connector labeled: “SPEAKER”. This has two wires: black and yellow. Where is this connected to ???

8. The new case has a connector labeled “RESET SW”. This has two wires: blue and white. Where is this connected to ???

Thankk you.

Hi G. W. Kremer,

I'll attempt a few of these (that was alot of questions! ).
Okay, basically for all the connectors (hard drive LED, power LED, power switch, reset switch, & speaker), they should all be together. Did you get a manual with the computer. If so, it should have a picture in there somewhere that shows you the pinout for the mobo. From what I can find, it should be a 2 x 8 area of pins. Some mobos have what pins go to what connector printed right on the mobo beside the pins; others you have to look it up in the mobo manual. Anyway, if you find these, just connect the corresponding connector to the pins in that cluster that it should go to. If you get the LED connector backwards it won't hurt anything, it just won't light up. If you know you have it hooked up to the right pins and it doesn't work just flip the connector around the other way and it should light up then. The switches don't matter which way they're connected. I don't think wire color makes any difference in these.
As for the fans, if they have 3 wires and a large plastic plug they are probably just normal molex style connectors that connect directly to the power supply. You can daisy chain them together on one power connector if they have a pass-through type of connector. If not, you can buy a pass-through for them in the event you run out of power connectors for everything else.
I'm not sure if that old of mobo had USB capabilities (it may have, I'm just not sure when USB became standard). If it does have USB there should be a connector somewhere to plug the front plugs into the mobo (again, check the manual for the pinout). If it doesn't have the hookup, your only option for USB would probably be to get a USB card that plugs into one of your PCI slots (but then again, you wouldn't be using the front USB ports that way either). hth

Yes. If it doesn't light up, reverse the connector.

2. On the new case there is a connector labeled “HDD LED”. This lead has two wires: white / red. Can I plug this lead into the MB, where I took the old “HDD LED” connector from ???. The old lead had black / red wires.

See #1.

3. The new case has a front and rear fan. The leads from the fans have three wires:
white / red / black (for the rear fan), and yellow / red / black (for the front fan). How do I connect these leads ??? Are there male pins on the MB for this ??? Or, can they be connected to the power supply in some way ???

Buy a couple 3 to 4 wire fan power adapters and hook them to the power supply.

4. The new case has two connector leads for USB. The first connector is green / white / red, with a single white connector. The second connector is green / orange / black, with a single black connector. Where are these connected to on the MB ??? These two USB connectors (from the new case) are labeled “2V USB- / USB+”. You can't use the front panel USB unless the motherboard has an auxiliary USB header on it, which I don't believe it does. The 2 on the port block at the rear are all you have.

5. The new case has a white / orange female connector labeled “POWER SW”. Where is this connected to ???

The power switch posts on the motherboard, they may be labeled "ATX Power", "PWR ON" or something similar.

6. The new case has a four-wire combo, with four separate leads that are labeled: “SPK L”, “SPK R”, “G”, and “MIC”. I have a sound card installed into the MB. At the top of the sound card there are three slots labeled: L - R (slot #1), L –R

You don't, unless your sound card has auxiliary connectors on it internally, which it probably doesn't. The slots you see are for CD audio cables.

7. The new case has a connector labeled: “SPEAKER”. This has two wires: black and yellow. Where is this connected to ???

To the speaker posts on the motherboard. Unneccessary if the motherboard has a piezo speaker on it.

8. The new case has a connector labeled “RESET SW”. This has two wires: blue and white. Where is this connected to ???

To the reset posts on the motherboard.

One question...as I couldn't determine from your post. Are you using the original power supply? I believe that is most likely an AT power supply, isn't it?.
