Opinions on these printers

After my last ordeal with my LaserJet 6L, HL left me a bitter taste, so I have avoided its printers.

I'm on the market for a laser printer and a colleage recommended the Brother HL-1450 or the HL-1440.

What do you think about those?

TIA for your input.

I think you should go look at the new HP's. The 6L was a known troublesome model, as were all the little HP's with a toploading paper feed. My experience with Brother lasers is not too good - they are very light duty machines. The new entry level HP's have returned to front cassette loading and work very well. Note that the USB-only price leader model is a "winprinter" like most inkjets.

Ack! The 1200 costs 510 bucks!! Too pricey!

The 1000 costs 300 USD but what do you mean with "winprinter"? I know that winprinters only work in Windows environments, so I will not be able to use it in Linux; but aside from that, is there any other problem with winprinters?

BTW, the HL-1450 costs 360 USD.

Another option is Samsung but its toners only last 2500 sheets.

The Samsungs are made by Brother I believe.

Winprinters work fine in Windows, they have no onboard ram so all spooling is done by the host system.

The best thing you can do for the money is look around for a good used or refurb older HP, anything but a toploader. The 4L was a great little printer (but slow - only 4ppm), and the big 4 and 4+ models are workhorses. They work in any OS that understands PCL and are easy to repair and find parts for.

Hi glc and Nuclear Krusader.

Good little printer, except:

Haven' t you found that the 4L stucks a lot. A soon a you print to much it gives a error (from experience at work) and you have to wait a minute and munually override it?

Why not try Panasonic? It's worth the price.

I have to second the HP printers. Nuc you probably just got stuck with a bad series but in general you can't go wrong with an HP in my opinion. You can go to www.hpshopping.com and buy direct I've found it to be a little cheaper and their shipping is fast and inexpensive. You usually have your new toy within three days even without the express shipping. Whatever you decide to buy good luck with it.

I have a 6L ('bout 3 years old) and have had no problems other than replacing the sep pad. Having said that, it's a very light duty "home" laser printer IMO. Also, the newer HP's, even the toploaders, are much better.

Gilo: It works a lot better with a ram upgrade.

Hey guys

I was wondering what's the cost of laser/ inkjet per page I just bought a Epson 785epx(inkjet) for pictures and it works good but would I have been better off buying "laser" cost per page wise??

Lasers are considerably cheaper cost per page, but color lasers are very expensive to buy in the first place.
