Looking for an External Hard Drive: What should I look for?
I'm thinking of buying an external hard drive for backing up my current system. I don't know exactly which features to look for except it must have USB 2.0 and 100-120 GB.
I know some of them don't even come with a power switch(??) but I don't know if that's supposed to be a big deal or not. If it doesn't have a power switch, does it have to be plugged in/turned on all the time? I'm looking to spend around $300, maybe more. What features should I look for to make this peripheral as easy to use as possible. Also, can I back up one file at a time or do I have to back up my my entire internal hard drive to it?? Is it easy to overwrite files on the external hard drive? Is USB 2.0 faster than firewire? Sorry if these questions sound silly but I don't know anything about external hard drives or how they work. Thanks in advance

In Windows, it works just like an internal hard drive, you use it the same way, you partition and format it and it takes drive letters the same way. USB 2.0 and Firewire are both pretty much the same speed. You can simply copy files to it or you can use a backup utility or an imaging utility.
