Compaq Presario 5441 Pc

I HAVE A COMPAQ PRESARIO 5441 PC, AND IT HAD A LUCENT WIN 56K MODEM, IT WENT BAD. THEN I BROUGHT A US ROBOTICS 56K MODEM, SORRY TO SAY BUT AFTER 8 MONTH, ITS NO LONGER HOLDING A DIAL TONE ANY LONGER, SO I TOOK IT BACK TO OFFICE DEPOT WHERE I GOT IT FROM AND THEY GAVE ME ANOTHER NEW ONE, SO WHEN I INSTALL IT, IT WOULD ASSIGN IT SELF AN IRQ, ITS RUNNING ON A WINDOWS 98. WHEN I WENT TO CONTROL PANEL AND MODEM, AND WHEN I TRIED TO RUN DIAGNOSTICS TO QUERY THE MODEM. IT REPORTED THAT IT COULD NOT OPEN THE PORT, CHECK TO ENSURE THE IRQ SETTING IS CORRECT, I GO TO DEVICE MANAGER AND THE ONLY RESOURCES THE MODEM HIS IS INPUT/OUTPUT ADDRESS.

I WAS WONDERING IF THERE A SPECIAL MODEM THE COMPAQ USES WITHOUT CONFLICT OR SHOULD I TRY TO PUT ANOTHER LUCENT BACK IN THERE

You don't have to use a special Compaq modem. Sounds like you've got an IRQ conflict, very common with modems.

ps: turn off the caps lock. It hurts my eyes.

I'm not sure what you're asking. Do you mean the key to hit to get into the bios? I believe on Compaqs it's F10. Go into device manager in Windows and see what the modem is conflicting with.

yes in regards to the bios, you answered it, in device manager with the us robotics modem it does'nt detect a conflict, but yet, it doesnt carry a irq either, that I'm not understanding

Hi agreen,

Try booting into Safe Mode, then go into Device Manager and remove any modem entries you find there. Reboot and let Windows find the modem and install the drivers again.

Hi agreen,

Is this a ISA or PCI modem? Does it have a lot of jumpers on it?
