I'm trying to install a Liteon 48x12x48x CD RW drive into my computer. Installation seemed easy enough. Turned on the computer and went to "my computer" and the new CD RW drive as well as the Zip drive I installed showed up. However, when I went to open the tray on the CD RW drive and install the drivers that came with the hardware the tray would not open. It was attempting to open but would only come out about 1mm then go back in and repeat this over and over. Then the CD RW drive as well as the CD Rom drive failed to show up on "my computer" at all. Restarted the computer and the CD RW drive does not work at all. The CD ROM drive has power but will not operate when a CD disk is inserted. ZIP drive works though.
Any suggestions. |

Do you have the jumpers on the drive set correctly? Have you tried unplugging the ZIP Drive's cable to see if it is conflicting with the CD-RW?

Ok...I set the CD RW as the master and the CD ROM as the slave. The Zip drive is on a completly different ribbon cable...will it still affect the CD drives? The CD RW tray is still attemping to open with no success. I'm a novice at all of this...figured I would try and put in a new CD RW and ZIP drive before attemping to upgrade the motherboard and processor.

It could be a defective drive, but that is fairly rare. What operating system are you using? How do you have the IDE drive installed (CD Drives, Zip, and Hard Drives)?

I am using windows 98. It is a gateway system with a pentium II. I'm not exactly sure I know what you are asking when you ask about the IDE drive be installed. I have 3 ribbon cables coming off the board. One goes to the hard drive(this is the cable I used to connect the ZIP drive). Another one was going to the CD ROM drive(this was the one I added the CD RW drive to). And the last cable was going to the 3.5 floppy drive.

OK, try this> Move the CD-ROM (jumpered as the Slave, to the cable the hard drive is own. Move the Zip drive jumpered as a Slave to the cable the CD-RW drive (Master) is own. Restart the computer and then go >Start>Settings>Control Panel>System and on the Device Manager Highlite the CD-RW drive and make sure that the "DMA" box has a check in it. If not check the box and restart the computer. If you are still having the problems with the tray then you may have a drive problem.

It almost seems like a mechanical problem with the drive door.
Is the drive under warranty? Personally I would try to get the pc back to how it was before you installed both drives. Then try to install one of them. Once you get it to work, try to add the other one to the system. This will help to determine if there are conflicts between the drives. I doubt that there are though. When I upgrade things I like to go slow, one thing at a time, to make sure each thing I add works. Then if there is a problem I have less things to check and rule out as the culprit. cat

I think its a drive problem also. I have the Zip drive working fine. Will check with a local guy who builds computers before I send this CD RW back to the company that I bought it from. Thats definately a good idea about adding one componet at a time and going slowly...will adhere to that on the next upgrade.

try poking a paper clip in the little hole in front of your cdrw if that doesnt open it, it might be defective.

Did that and now the thing will not close completely. Maybe a sledgehammer will do the trick.

Did the drawer/tray come out completely? Did you try using the paper clip when you are closing the drive tray/drawer. I think by now I would be frustrated too. Is it under warranty? I don't know if these doors are like a vcr door in that there are timing marks on the gears/rails. I would have misgivings about opening it up to look cause i've never had one apart, But it does sound like a problem with the drawer/tray mechanism.
