looking for a dvd writer, i've got some questions

ok so right now im looking to buy a dvd writer for my computer, what "kind" (dvd-r, dvd+r, dvd-rw, dvd+rw)of writer would fit my needs:

1. copy movie dvds (if that's even possible)
2. store/backup data
3. be able to export my edited videos onto a dvd

that's basically what i want, it would be cool if all i need is a 250 dollar dvd-r drive. i don't really understand the difference between -r and +r. should i buy a -r now, since it's cheaper and has cheaper media, or should i get a newer, more up to date writer?

Here's a good discussion about DVD burners.

alright thanks, but i still have one question,

is it even possible to copy normal dvd movies, cause i read in an article about them putting some kind of thing in the dvd which makes it impossible to copy.

I surely hope your not copying for illegal purposes (e.g. renting it, copying, then returning it, having the perfect copy in possession), but if your not, then no, most DVD's should be copyable without problems.

I subscribe to Pcworld and this is a good guide/review to help you make a decision. The forum NK pointed out along with this should help.

About copying movie DVDs:

Well, the problem is that most movie DVDs are dual layer, and there is no dual layer blank available (only single layer), so you need to shrink the contents of the DVD to max. 4,38 GB in order to burn. That can be done by taking out the extras, or unwanted audio tracks. If this doesn't help, you need to re-encode, or split the movie up to 2 DVDs. But this is mainly for 3 hour movies.
