l2 cache problems
i get intermitent lock-ups when external cache is enabled. biostar m5ala mobo with 192mb sdram (258 + 64 but mobo only sees 128 per slot). sometimes during boot up himem.sys reports unusable memory location at xxxx-xxxx blah, blah, blah and sometimes not. MSKB says to turn off l2 cache and it cures the problem of lock ups, but now i have the new problem of no l2 cache. any ideas, other than a new mobo! can i add l2 cache? if so, how.

Hi bwood,
Sounds like a AMD K6 CPU is involved. If so, I don't think there's much you can do except replace the CPU itself. From what I can remember, AMD sent out a bunch of K6 CPU's that had faulty L2 cache and to get it to run properly, the L2 had to be disabled. What CPU are you using? Cricket

L2 cache is on the motherboard - that's L1 cache that's in the processor - unless it's a K6-3 which has both.
I'd change out the system ram to something that's correctly seen, the himem.sys error is ram, not cache. |

it is a k6-2 500. the ram issue is limited by the mobo. appearently will only see 128 per slot. guess i should just save some pennies and upgrade....

Right - and I'm saying you should get that 256mb module out of there, it may be causing your problems. You have RAM problems or himem.sys would not be giving you that error.
