Problems with new build

Hi my new build isnt posting.

I built my new pc last night, at first i just installed cpu, heat sink, memory and graphics card and tested and it booted up perfectly straight into BIOS. Have put mother board in the case i connected the CDRW on the secondary as master and the Maxtor Hard drive on the primary as master.

Went to boot up and the system wont post and when trying to turn PC off have to pull the power cord out the back as pressing Power Switch doesnt work.

ASUS A7V333 mobo
256MB Crucial DDR RAM
Athlon 2000xp
Coolermaster 2300+ Heat Sink
Maxtor DM8 40GB ATA133
Samsung CDRW

Double check the front panel connections for the motherboard to make sure you have connected them correctly. It has nothing to do with the hard drive/CD setup.

Make sure you're using the 80 IDE ribbon cable on the hard drive, the drive is jumpered to CS (cable select) and that the IDE cable is not backwards. I believe the 80 wire cables have a pin hole blocked so it might not be possible to install it backwards but check that anyway.

Blue to motherboard, black to the hard drive.

Try disconnecting the cables and power leads from all the IDE devices apart from the HD. Does it then POST?

Try another power lead to the HD.

What brand and Wattage of Power Supply do you have?

ok looks like i solved the problem it wasnt the HDD or anything else it was the bios resetting itself as it detected an unstable Processor speed, it would boot up once then second time it wouldnt boot up untill i switched off the power at the wall, so with HDD connected i power up and it went into BIOS setting and had an error message when i selected processor speed.

so all sorted now after saving bios setting boots everytime.
