Question This might be a stupid question

I just purchase an Intel D845GLAD motherboard for my dad for Christmas and my question has to do with the power supply. It states that failure to use an ATX12V or SFX-12V power supply, or not connecting the additional power supply lead to the Desktop Board D845GLAD may result in damage.

My question is this :

My power supply that I have is a Deer Model # DR-300ATX and it doesn't have the 12 V processor core voltage connector (I take this to be the ATX12V connector?) and I was wondering if I can still use this power supply or do I have to purchase another one?

If I have to purchase another power supply, which one would you recommend?

Hi Strider,

Do your Dad a favor and don't use that DEER PSU in his new computer. They are terrible and could damage the motherboard and other parts when it dies (yes...it's not if, but when).

Get a good quality power supply that is P4 ready. Look at the 300 watt power supplies from Antec, Astec, Enlight, Enermax, Sparkle Power, PowerMan, Hi-Power, Fortran Source, AOpen or PC Power & Cooling.

Thanks for the info, I was wondering about the Deer PSU from reading other threads and seeing that Deer wasn't recommended. I wonder if that fried my old AMD 950 motherboard that I had in there? Everything looked ok on the motherboard, meaning it doesn't look like a it fried my CPU, Graphic Card, Sound Card, etc..., but the MB itself has a few brown spots on it looking like that might be fried. Just going to replace the PSU with the one of you recommendations, thus hopefully avoiding a call from my dad

Thanks for the help.

I would also recomend getting a dual fan PSU. I just got an Enermax 350 watt with two fans, one of which is manually adjustable, and it having two fans dropped temps about 3-4 degrees across the board. Its also pretty quiet, quiter than my case fans at least, while also being more powerful.

P4 cooling is not really an issue - we use standard 300w power supplies with the extra connector with no problem.

I'm going to add Heroichi, Chieftec, and Nspire to the recommended list.

If you just want to run over to Best Buy and buy a power supply, you can't go wrong with the Antecs they sell, but they aren't particularly cheap. Just don't buy the FMI's from CompUSA - those are questionable at best.

First, let me says Thanks for suggesting to replace the Deer PSU, I did with an Antec 300w power suppley. It running great and I am suprised on how quiet the power supply is.

Second, this is my second Intel computer that I have build, since I don't do any OCing, I know with this board (D845GLAD) it is impossible to begin being it's an Intel board to begin with, but this computer is meant for my father anyways. I really do't plan to OC my computer that I use (P4S8X, I know not a great boad, but it works for me ), for with today's computer be fast to begin with - I rather go for stability than trying to get more speed. This is my fourth computer I have built so far and it is getting easier and easier to build. This is probably because I come to PCMech forums and read other users posts. It's starting to become addicting.

Building definitely is addicting! Always looking into the next build or upgrade, just never enough money.
