cpu speed
I have just built my first pc, but i am having a problem setting the cpu speed. My mainboard is an ECS, K7S5A with an SIS735 chipset, AMD1800XP cpu, 512mb ddr2100 ram. When i set the cpu to 133/133 and restart it doesnt even get to post, i have to reset the cmos and then set the cpu to 100/133. It starts ok but my cpu speed is 1.27 can anyone tell me what the problem is

The cpu speed of the xp 1800 is 1.53GHz.
I havent heard too much good about that particular motherboard on this forum or elsewhere, you might want to consider sending it back and getting one with the kt333 or kt400 chipset. |

My AMD 1800+ XP runs at 266FSB(Motherboard FSB is set at 133MHz) .
Does your motherboard support 133FSB? Could be a bad motherboard, since it screws up on 133MHz and not on 100MHz. Consider into thinkin of getting a replacement. |

Could be the chipset..I use VIAź KT333 Chipset and it runs fine at 266MHz with the AMD Athlon XP 1800+.
Maybe the chipset that you have doesn't support the 266MHz bus speed. |

That chipset is supposed to support the 133 FSB. There are alot of problems with it for some reason though. You can read about several people having the same problem if you go to Newegg and find that mobo and click on the "read user reviews" at the bottom of that box. It seems that some of those boards just seem to have problems like that; nobody gives a fix though, that I can find anyway.

I suspected the motherboard to be faulty anyways. Since he is able to run at 100MHz fine, but not at 133MHz, when the motherboard and the chipset suppose to support 133MHz.
Yeah you should change it back. Perhaps get a replacement or buy another motherboard with your refunded money. |

I know we have beaten this to death here - and some of you just love your ECS boards - but you generally get what you pay for, and that's a $56 motherboard. I also see 2 things at Newegg - they mention that there is an error in the manual, and they seem to be selling refurbs for $35 - does that second one tell you something? What that tells me is they have had so many returns that they have had to have repaired, they are trying to get what they can out of them.
I can sure appreciate the desire to save money, and to get the most you can for your buck, but budget motherboards are not where it's at with very few exceptions, it's too important a component to take a chance with. |
