Well my first build is finally up and running. The only thing I am having trouble with is my floppy drive doesnt work, heres the details. Its pluged in by itself, and powerd off the same cord that splits to my hard drive, and 2 cd roms. The green light is constantly lit on the floppy, and it shows up under my computer...byut it doesnt work. Also I dont think my leds for the front of the pc work, ya know the ones for power and reset.

I remember i had the same problem myself. Make sure that the ribbon cable going to the floppy and mobo are connected properly (red line connected to Pin 1 and stuff). The leds were also confusing for me. I did a more "guess and check" routine for those, because u can probably just turn them around in the same spot and it will work then.

could it possibly be my ribbon is backwards? I mean that the mobo end is connected to the floppy and vice versa?

The far end with the several conductors that are twisted go to the floppy, and I've found that pin 1 on my floppies is opposite of the cdrom's and HD's, and check closely for bent pin. real easy to do on those!

Jeff, When the floppy drive light is constantly on, it usually means the ribbon cable is backwards as you suggested. Try reversing it and see it that doesn't solve the problem.

The Intel board has a nonstandard power LED connector - its only 2 pins where most cases use a 3 pin connector. You have to extract one of the pins from the connector and reset it into the center hole.
You have to use the little short floppy cable that came with the motherboard, the Intel board does not support 2 floppies. The end with the twist goes at the drive end, and pin 1 orientation is critical. |

Okay, well i got my floppy drive to work, actually it worked once then i restarted and now it says my disks arnt formatted. Also in DOS when I try to go to A: it says there is a general failure with the drive. Odd? Anyways im reformatting right now, I hope it goes away.

Yes it was with a perfect disk, actually disk cause I tried more then once. Anyways heres the deal now! I get non system disk error whenever I start up the computer. But I have no disk in the drive. The cables must be messed up but I dont know why. Also I am using a rounded floppy cable if that helps at all. I also tried a regular IDI cable. Nothing!

it is hard to tell pin 1 on floppies .if the green light is on just pull the ide off the floppy and re-insert it the other way,if the green light goes off that was prob.what was wrong.

You've got to get correct end to MOBO and FDD and the pin1 thing correct on both ends.

Could this be due to a reformatted hard drive?

When you get a invalid system disk error, that usually means you may need to boot up with a boot disk. Also, if you don't have an operating system installed, BIOS tries to boot with your Hard drive, and if it cant find anything to boot off of, it will give you that error.
Proper term for that is that BIOS cannot find a boot record. |

What are you set to boot from in BIOS?? Sounds like your tryingto boot from floppy but don't have a bootable floppy in there and correct if your HD isn't bootable at this point you would also get that message!

What point exactly are you actually at?? If it's formatting HD then installing OS, you should be able to set BIOS to boot from CDROM and put your WinOS disk in and you will be able to accomplish getting comp up and working.

Ive already had my computer up and running, only the floppy didnt work (had the constant led lit up)
So I tried fixing the floppy by switching the IDE cables and it worked for about one second, after that it said the disks wernt formatted and in DOS it said drive a:/ had a general error. At that point I went to DOS and started to format my hard drive. If I boot form a CD rom I can get my computer working, but I need my floppy working to install my network drivers. |

Hi Jeff Roy,
You fixed your floppy drive by moving the IDE cables around? Do you mean the floppy cable? If you did move or flip the floppy cable around, it shouldn't have affected the hard drive or other devices on the IDE channels. Cricket

Sounds like maybe you bumped your other IDE cables while in there trying to fix your floppy. Check those other cables to your HD and cdrom,

I didnt fix it completely. I moved the floppy cable and was able to keep the light from staying on, but it still doesnt boot from it.

Hi Jeff Roy,
Have you tried another floppy drive yet? Red stripe on the floppy cable is oriented to pin 1 on both the motherboard and floppy drive? End with twist is on floppy drive? Cricket

Hi Jeff Roy,
I'd try the standard ribbon cables to test with. If your system works fine with the regular cables, then something is wrong with those round cables. Cricket
