Ethernet hub box or NIC problem
I guess I could of put this post in the network section, but I kind of think that the problem is hardware, not software. I have a linksys 100TX fast ethernet card that I'm trying to hook up to a netgear ethernet hub box. The card is installed correctly as far as I can tell driver wise, when I enable it I can see the icon by my clock with an X through it and the popup says 'network cable unplugged' then when I plug in the cable (to the card and also the hub box) the icon goes away, and the LED light on the back of the card lights up, but the one on the hub box doesnt, however it does when I plug in another computer to it. The local area network properties also say that I'm connected and everything is ok, but I cant see the other computer that's also hooked up to the hub box, I'm sure if I could get it to light up on the hub box side I would be able to see it. If I unplug the cable the icon by my clock comes back saying the same thing, also if I plug it back in and move it around a little, pull it in and out some the light on the hub box will come on for just a second, actually it will just blink, and even though I have had the same type of problem in the past and it was the cable that was the problem, it's not like I can jiggle the cable just right and get it to stay, the only thing it will ever do is blink, sometimes more then once, but never staying on for longer then a blink. I am running winXP, and the other compter that seems to connect to the hub box and make it light up is an old laptop running win98. I will try another cable as soon as I can get one, but was just wondering if maybe someone who knows a little more about networking then me would know if maybe I have something setup wrong somewhere, or maybe the card isnt working right. The only other NIC card I have is out of a Compaq, made by Compaq, and I really dont want to put that in my machine. When I see the cards properties from the device manager and hit the advanced tab, on the connection type it's set to 'auto detect' should I change it to '100base TX'? then theres the 'burst length' and 'transmit threshold' which are set to 16DWORDS and 256bytes. Then in the local area connection properties from the control panel under the authentication tab, I have 'enable network access control using IEEE 802.1X' checked, below that the EAP type is smart card or other certificate. 'Authenticate as computer when computer information is available' is checked but the last 'authenticate as guest when user or computer information is unavailable' is not checked. The smart card or other certificate proberties has 'use acertificate on this computer' checked as opposed to use my smart card, below that 'validate server certificate' is checked but nothing else below that. My guess is that the cable is causing the problem, but from my setup I listed above if someone thinks I have something wrong please let me know.
