problem accessing dvd drive contents and problem with secondary IDE
Hey guys,
Recently i purchased a CDRW 40x 12x 48x (Liteon) and seeing as i already have a 16x dvd drive installed, i need to fit it up to the secondary IDE. However, whenever it is hooked up to the secondary IDE, if i try and burn a cd (other than say.. a very short music CD) the computer blue screens and restarts, the error message goes by far to fast to see it before the comp restarts. this has also happened when i try my dvd drive with the secondary ide and try and install software. ive tried it with both ide cable types, both with exactly the same problem. Also, recently my DVD drive hasnt been working propperly. you can insert a cd / dvd and it will autoplay (if it has that function) but i cant actually access the drive ie. view files on it. Whenever i click open on the drive the pointer switches to load for a few seconds and nothing happens. if i try to explore it it just opens the desktop in an explorer window and wont allow access the the dvd drive. can anyone help me with these problems? cheers, Matt. Make sure the drives are jumpered correctly. If you are using an 80-wire cable, set both drives to Cable Select, then set the Lite-On to the Grey connector, and the DVD to the Black connector. If you are using a 40-wire, just jumper Master/Slave, cable position doesn't matter.

tried it, cable selected both an still get the same problem. Im actually using a 40wire for the secondary, cause i dont run an HD off it. the Primary is an 80wire and up until now (almost a year and a half) its been fine with the HD set as master and the DVD as slave.
PS. Bloody quick reply that m8, cheers! |

Hi spiritfire,
Did you install the VIA Bus Master Drivers or are you using the Microsoft Windows Bus Master Drivers? Cricket

Hi spiritfire,
No, don't install the VIA Bus Master Drivers as they can cause problems. The Microsoft Windows Bus Master Drivers are actually much better. The problem could be the ECS motherboard. What kind of RAM are you using? Cricket

Cricket,
I am using the VIA Bus Master Drivers, and they work fine for me. No problems at all. Maybe because I got a good motherboard But all motherboards work differently, so they could cause problems.
