Case fan
I have a custom built PC. Inside it doesn't have a fan to cool the inside. I'm talking about the fan that sticks to the sides of the case. Is it worth to get a fan and install it?

Hi Krotos,
Yes...if you have a fairly high powered system it's worth it to add a cooling fan or two to protect your investment. Typical set up is one fan on the lower front drawing cool air in and one fan on the back of the case near the CPU to blow heated air out. What are your system specs? Cricket

Well what I have 3 drives and 4 PCI slots occupied and I was wondering if i should get a fan and since its cheap i might as well get one. I put a Vantec fan but the screw holes on my case are huge and the screws are a bit small so is this normal?

Use washers or screws with bigger heads.
Are you using a AMD or INTEL CPU? An AMD system will require more active cooling than a INTEL system. Cricket

You'll be getting two or more case fans to play it safe.

Just don't overdue on adding the case fans. You may not have enough Power Cables to connect all of the case fans, and plus, your power supply may not handle with all the usage from your hardware and the X amount of case fans you got.
I suggest 3 for AMD, and like 2 for P4..All depends on the temps..if you got 2, temps are bad, add another one. If temps are bad still, you will need to rearrange your case fans or just buy better case fans. Sometimes you will want high CFM air flow than high RPM. |

It's kind of fun to mess with fan cooling. Especially if you are taking any classes concerning thermodynamics and what not =).
Case fans can definately help keep your CPU and friends at reasonable temperatures. In fact, you can get results close to water-cooling if you plan it out right. Just remember that heat rises, and cold air sinks. So the lower your intake fan is, the better. And the higher your out-going fan is, the better. I've been toying with the idea of piping my CPU's fan straight out of the case. I have enough fans in there to make up for the lack of air flow as a result of piping out the CPU fan's heat. Anyhow, fans are good, so long as your PSU can support them. |

Here's a good diagram of how to mount the case fans for the best cooling. Courtesy of BFD Deadeye.
