go into you bios(usually F1, F2 in a HP) and set the boot order to look for the cd-rom first. that should let it boot straight from the cd.

Your laptop should have come with some sort of recovery cd to reinstall everything. If this is the case, simply put the cd in the drive and follow the process of reinstalling (although this will pretty much reinstall all those unwanted programs). Is this the case or did HP include an actual Windows XP disk? If that's the case, simpy do what GSXdan has said and follow installation instructions on the cd

What he means is that during system startup, you need to enter the BIOS by pressing some key (usually DEL). Once in the BIOS, change the boot order so that it is set to read from the CD-ROM first (an example would be Device 1 - CD-ROM, Device 2 - Floppy, Device 3 - IDE-0). Once that is done, insert your Windows XP CD and restart the computer. It should boot from the Windows XP disc and you can follow instructions from there on how to reinstall the OS.

hei Surge1243
do i need to reformat my hard drive first before i put in the Window XP installation CD. also, i try to install window XP in my desktop. when i install it it give me a message that window XP installation must be running in windows enviroment no the dos enviroment. so in my desktop i have to install win98 first then i uprade the computer to window XP since i can't install window XP straight without installing win98 or winMe. Do i need to do the same for my laptop also. |

First, is this disc a straight Windows XP cd or is it simply a recovery cd included with the laptop? If it's a Windows XP cd, it's bootable, so you should just be able to (providing your computer is set to read from the CD-ROM first) insert the cd in the drive, restart the computer and you can choose to go through the Windows XP setup. I think you do you have to reformat the hard drive if your doing a clean installation (the cd will give you this option during installation). If this cd is simply a recovery cd, insert the cd into the drive while in Windows and follow the instructions to restore the system.

You may want to find out a little more about the drive structure of your notebook. I have never seen a HP with a seperate partition for bios info but Compaq does and since they have merged I would be careful. If you don't feel comfortable take your notebook and the CD's that came with it to a reputable shop and have them do it.
Oh and If you really want to speed it up you might double the memory XP will be slow with only 128mb of RAM. |
