Why does my sound skip?

my sound skips on my new build. I noticed it with mp3s and while i try to play games. I have a 2.4 ghz with 256 rd ram and an ati radeon 7500. Whats the deal?

I use Audio subsystem for AC '97 processing using the Analog Devices AD1885 codec featuring SoundMAX* with SPX*, or the AD1981B codec featuring SoundMAX* Cadenza* (D850EMVR SKUs only)
The hard drive is not working
and it happenes while I play cds also.

Jeff Roy,
I had the same problem because Win98se put the sound chip on the same IRQ with my NIC.
I changed slots and had Win98se sort the IRQs' out.
No more problem.

IRQ=Interrupt Request, a method by which a device signals the CPU that it needs attention. Basically, you don't want them being shared between devices. Go to Device Manager Start>Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager, and check to see if the sound is sharing any resources with another device.

normally i let BIOS assign irqs.

i set 'Plug-n-Play OS installed' to false - always thought that would not let winderz change the irqs...is this right?

I went to device manager and multimedia and i only had 1 thing listed...my sound. Also in GTA3 I usualy got skipping, then i changed the audio device to somehting else like aurel 3d (i dont even have that) and no more skipping in game. How can I adjust bios so that this problem goes away?

Have you updated the drivers for your onboard sound?

Jeff - I've given you a suggestion in the other thread you posted in Gaming - please don't crosspost! One thread per issue, please. I'm going to close this thread, we'll continue in the other one.
