First build minor problem
Just completed my first build, running fairly smoothly save for one thing. Once I installed my network card I could no longer shut down windows, it just hangs on the "Windows 98 is now shutting down..." screen. I was able to shut down fine until I installed the network card. Also I can use the reset option fine, the computer resets as normal, its only the shutdown option. Any ideas? My specs are as follows:
52X Sony CDROM IDE 8/4/32A Plextor CDRW IDE AMPXP 2000+ CPU 512mb 33Mhz DDR Ram ASUS A7V333 motherboard Iomega 250mb Internal Zip 100GB WD 7200rpm 8mb Buffer Sound Blaster Live Digital 5.1 ATI Radeon 8500 64mb DDR |

What PCI slot is the network card in? Any conflicts in Device Manager?

The troubleshooter wasn't able to fix the problem.
I've 2 of 5 PCI slots in use, one for the sound card and one for the network card. The computer runs fine with just one card installed (either), the problem only arise with both cards installed. The cards are in the first and third slots, and I've tried moving them around it doesn't seem to make a difference. Any ideas? |

Hi ajm1,
PCI Slot 1 shouldn't be used if you're already using a AGP video card...those two slots share resources and would cause conflicts. Try moving whatever card is in PCI Slot 1 to another slot (try PCI slot 2). Also, what NIC are you using? Cricket

How about that shutdown patch on the MS website?

The NIC is a D-Link DFE-530TX.
I'll put it in another slot and see how it goes so. |

The patch doesn't seem to have worked after all!!
Now it shuts down sometimes, other times it doesn't. It doesn't appear to be as a result of anything I do during a session, I tried booting it up once, and shutting it down without doing anything else and it still hung. Also I've discovered a new problem, to do with the sound this time. Not sure if this happened after I applied the shutdown patch, but I don't think it did. The problem is as follows, sound seems to work fine in everything except games. In the games music, sound effects and everything is fine except for the speech, its really low. I have to turn my speakers up full blast to hear anything. I've tried fiddling with all the settings provided by the Creative Labs tools. One thing that works is using the EAX Control Panel supplied by creative labs, and turning on an effect like reverb to 100%. But this distorts all the sound and is just crap to listen to. And the thing is this was working before, I can't remember exactly when it started acting up I think it was yesterday or maybe the day before. Thanks |

If you have not done so already, uninstall all the junk software that came with your sound card. Go into the device manager and remove the sound card profile and the NIC profile. Shutdown the computer and move the sound card to PCI slot 4 (5 slot board) or slot 5 (6 slot board). Pull the NIC and leave it. Restart the computer and only install the sound card driver. Shutdown and put the NIC in and then restart the computer and finish the re-install.
