How do I get data from a dead HD to new HD?

Ok I'm an idiot. My HD starts making a clicking sound and just dies. I know it had to be that arm thing not working properly. So instead of bringing it somewhere to get fixed, I unscrew the six srcrews on the cover of the HD and try to pop it off so I can see inside. Well that didn't work so I just used some more muscle. Bent the corner of the cover up, great! At this point I now the HD is done, so I really start working at the other corners, bent them all up, but the cover never did come off. It is the arm thing though, it just keeps going back and forth.

Ok so:

Can my HD be fixed(it's probably cheaper to just buy a new one)?

Can my data on this dead HD be transfered to my new HD?

Once the cover is removed and dust get's in there is the data ruined?

I told you I was an idiot.

-Probably not. Buy a new one.
-Probably not; but you can spend a grand (more or less) to have some company "try" to get the data off. Never, ever, take apart a HDD. They are made in clean rooms for a reason.
-Yes it's probably ruined; you can put it back together and try but my money is on it being a gonner.

The FBI or the CIA can take your platters and get the data recovered!
So all you need to do is commit a federal offense like kidnapping accross state lines or something and they will be over to recover your data. Then after they do that just admit it was all a big misunderstanding and all should be well, and thank them for recovering your data!

JUST KIDDIN:::

As Mentioned above, it can be done by the right entity that has the right equipment, but would be quite costly.!!

That's what I thought.

So do you think I should buy now, right before x-mas, or after x-mas for the best deal, and where is a good place to find cheap HD's?

Thanks guys for the quick responces.

Look around at all the Office Supply, Electronics and Computer stores. Both Maxtor and Western Digital have some excellent rebates on retail box hard drives. These are not available from NewEgg since they sell OEMs.

will recover data from a dead hard drive. Very good rep.

Could be pricey, though.

Cool

You give no clue as to your location, but if in states, if in or fairly close to large population center with Best Buy, CompUSA, Circuit City watch ads. They have been having some excellent deals lately.

If you can locate a program called "Lost and Found" by Powerquest, you can generally recover data from a crashed drive so long as it still spins.

But, because you took the drive apart, all bets are off. The only option now might be professional data recovery. Sorry.

I don't know it is still on but CompUSA had a sale for 40GB Western Digital 7200rpm drives for $59. I don't think it will be any cheaper after Christmas.

Yeas I would say your drive is trash. Unless you have something that is absolutely irreplaceable I wouldn't even think about data recovery on it.

Hey, think of the bright side. You can take apart that drive and use the platters for mirrors. I have HDD platters from different angles in my cube so no one can sneak up behind me.
