Hard drive DMA

I have recently installed a second hard drive (maxtor 30gb 7200rpm) I`ve got it as master on the second IDE channel with a CDRW as slave. Also got a 6 gig drive with a DVD drive on the Primary IDE channel. DMA is set for all drives except the 30 gig one, Windows won`t let me set DMA for it. Running mpegs from it is jerky! I`ve installed loads of games on it and the run fine!

System:

PII 450
192 MB
6.1 gb HD
DVD drive
30 gb HD
TEAC CDRW
Pinnacle tv card (rave)
Matrox G400 Agp
Soundblaster 4.1 Digital Sound card
Mustek (USB) Scanner
Red & Green light on front of case.

Not sure if this will help the DMA prob, and I've read that even though the little box isn't checked if the drive is dma capable it will be using dma. One thing though it is generally advised to put your Hard drives as Master/Slave on primary IDE and put those optical drives as primary/slave on secondary. And if you have 80 conductor IDE ribbon cable, jumper Hard drives for cable select, put boot drive on far end(black) and secondary drive in middle connector(Gray). If you have the time and are willing to give this setup a try it may give you a bit of a performance boost!

Cool

Ok, I`ve put both hd`s on the primary channel. I still can`t set DMA but it seems to work fine. Also in device manager the HD is called `Generic disk type 46` on the Primary channel and generic disk 80 on the secondary channel

Thanks for all your replies.

Hi praxis,

You may want to go to Maxtor's site and research that HD model number. I don't think they made a 30 gig in quite a while. The spec sheet at Maxtor.com should tell you what the drive is capible of handling.

If you are doing disk to disk things, you may be better off with both as masters on separate cables. Plus the device manager that references the ide controller may tell you if dma is active on the pri and sec channels. Wich os is this?

Hi praxis,

Have you checked out Maxtor's site?

What is the Hard drive model number?

Hi praxis,

'8' Series are ATA 133 drives. Are you using the 80 wire drive ribbon (required) or the 40 wire? Using a 40 wire ribbon can give the symptoms you describe.

I have read that IDE 2 is suppose to be used for optical drives, as it does not support Hard Disk speeds. IDE 1 is made for that.

I would bet that this is an ATA33 motherboard anyway - so which channel you use is immaterial. I doubt that the cable makes a difference here either - I have an IBM ATA66 drive on a 40 wire on an ATA33 controller, and it enables DMA just fine.
