Motherboard and CPU upgrade
I was looking for a little info on upgrading a Mobo and CPU while while keeping the same hard drive with Win98 installed. Is this a realistic idea for someone with a little better than basic PC knowledge but a desire to learn how this might be accomplished? I also plan on building my own PC from scratch as well soon but the Mobo-CPU only upgrade has me very curious.
I currently have a Dell Dimension 4100 with a PIII 733mhz with a 32Mb Geforce 2, Soundblaster Live! and 512Mb PC133 Ram and was looking to upgrade into the 1.7Ghz-2.0Ghz range using Intel Mobo and P4 processsor. I understand upgrading a Dell might be more trouble than its worth after reading some of the other posts in this forum. Any comments and suggestions are much appreciated! Thanks

You should be able to load into WIN98 just fine. But you will have to reinstall ALL of your drivers. Search on the PCMECH forums for the "ENUM" trick. The ENUM trick is where you delete a certain registry key in the registry, reboot the PC, and when you boot back up, Windows will ask you to install driver by driver until everything is 100%.
I highly suggest reformatting and repartitioning for maximum performance! |

I did mobo/cpu upgrade to a Dell recently. For a brand name computer, it was surprisingly trouble free, as far as the proprietary problems go. Just a couple little areas of struggle was all.
That model is a fairly new one if my memory serves me correctly, so you may very well have success with that project. Your choice of mobo brand is excellent for stability. You can't find a better one for a P4 cpu unless you desire to overclock, then an Asus brand with the Intel chipsets would be best. The particular model of Intel mobo I'm not so good on. Some other guys here are better on that. For a P4 cpu, the 1.8A or 2.0A are great, the 2.0A is prolly better cuz you get more power for a nominal price increase. You *WILL* need a new case and power supply. The Dell power supply has a non-standard wiring scheme on the ATX connector and doesn't have the P4 auxiliary ATX power plug. The ENUM trick will work very well here, I've done it moving a drive from a D-4100 into a P4 Intel.

I appreciate the helpful comments.
![]() What are the basic steps for moving the existing HD with Win98 from my existing computer and gettng it to work with the new Mobo and CPU? If there is an existing thread (that has this type of info) I could check out that would be great too. Thanks! |
