Problems w/ PC & Video Card
I have a serious issue w/ my graphics card or AGP port when I am playing games. When I use my PC for day to day things such as web browsing, working with Excel or Word, listening to music, etc. everything is fine. Ocassioanly my PC will reset on its own and when it comes back, the error report says it has to do with device drive but can't give any specifics. This does not happen very often.
The real problem I am having is when I try to play games on my PC. Everything installs fine and the game starts to run OK, but soon after the game begins, my screen will go black, my monitor goes in to power saving mode, and my PC locks up. I need to restart my PC so that I can use it again. I have tried using the various different drivers for my graphics card, and I have updated the drivers for my AGP port, but nothing seemed to help. Has anyone else had this problem or can anyone help me? Here are the specs of my PC: ECS P4S5A Motherboard Intel Pentium 4 2.0 Ghz CPU eVGA GeForce 4 Ti 4200 128 MB video card 1 GB PC133 SDRAM If you need more of the specs, just let me know. Thanks |

Hi SCX,
Sounds like it could be a power supply problem, or even a mobo problem. How old is your PS? What size and brand is it? Did this problem just start? Has everything been working OK up till then?? TwoRAils |

My Power Supply is a VPower ATX 300W Switching Power Supply, and it is less than a year old.
I have had the occasional reset during Windows, but I just started trying to run games. |

Hi SCX,
I tried searching for that power supply, and came up zip... I'm still thinking PS; do you have access to another PS to test your system with? TwoRails |

Why would the Power Supply affect the video card like that? No, I don't have another to use for testing.
I am thinking it is a compatibilty issue with my motherboard and video card, but I can't figure it out. |

Does this happen with ALL games?? Have you played any ShockWave games on the Web? Does it happen with both DirectX And OpenGL games??

The two games I tried were Tiger Woods 2003 and Dragon's Lair 3D.
I have tried Flash games on the net and have had no problems with it. |

Try running DXDIAG.exe and see if it finds any problems. Hold down the Windows key and tap the 'R' key to bring up the Run box, and type in dxdiag.exe to run the program.

Sudden Reboots can also mean faulty RAM. Try another stick of RAM, and see if anything changes.
Also it could be a bad Power Supply like the others said. |

Found very little on the power supply, but from what I did find it seems its just another Deer with a different name.

Gf4ti's need a lot of power, sometimes more than a 300/350 watt unit can supply, along with that needed by the cpu and drives plus mem.
The cpu alone will take 70 watts or so if it is a xp, for example. Then add the fact that an ECS mobo is considered unstable or "risky". Then on top of that that EVGA is considered the Yugo/Renault of the vid card biz. Drivers may be an issue here, try the 4109 nvidia driver if you are not using them. All this should be taken into consideration. I have a evga just like yours, and have seen the same errors, dunno if it is a power prob or the card for sure. It is less of a problem with the 4109s, all I know. |

Try disabling any Power Management options in the BIOS and monitor the results.
If that doesn't help, then try disabling all Power Management options in Windows - particularly "Standby": Click Start, click Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click Power Options. Again monitor the results. HTH |

Bought a good power supply and still the same results. At least I know it is not the power supply now.

Memory checked out fine and the power supply was not an issue. That now leaves the motherboard and video card.
Due to things I have heard about ECS motherboards and the SiS chipset, I just ordered an ASUS motherboard with Intel chipset. I can also get my video card replaced for free through eVGA. |

My comp started to do similar things when I ran games recently. I switched out the mobo and HSF and all the sudden its running perfect again. Hopefully the new mobo helps you too.

O and i think the problem might be a Graphics error, maybe a OPENGL error or something??
