ADSL Modem problem
Ive recently been building a PC for a friend. A connected my DSL Modem (Fujitsu FDX-310) to his PC to download some software etc.. It worked fine, when I moved it back to my PC it wont work anymore, but if I use it on the machine ive just built it works fine.
I tried to unistall the drivers but the installshield wizard hung. So I tried to reinstall but it said it was already installed. I tried to manually delate every related file and registry entry but It still would not work. In the end I backed up my hard drive to the PC Im building and reinstalled XP from scratch. Ive installed the modem drivers and it still wont work. It detects the modem it all installs and runs fine but then gets to the stage of verifying username and password, hangs for a while and then fails. If I plug it into the PC im building it still works fine. Any ideas? |

It possible that when you put the modem on the new computer it updated internal firmware see if their is a reset switch on the modem if not unplug it from the wall socket and the computer for about 30mins and try again

It sounds like an issue with your ISP. Maybe your user name or password is failing because of an upper/lower case issue. If they used MAC addresses you wouldn't think they would have let you sign in with the new computer. But possibly now it recognizes the new NIC and not yours anymore. If you are getting as far as the password the issue is between your computer and theirs. I would give them a call and see why you can't connect your account.
If they do use MAC addresses and you work on very many computers it might be a good idea to buy a router and clone your address with it. That way you can hook up all the "strange" computers you want without affecting your account. |

Thanks all, It turned out to be caused by two problems, a poor quality USB lead, and that stupid XP power management feature.
