How do I build it myself.

What do I do first?

how much do you think I would have to spend to get that type of rig?

Talk to a local sytem builder and see what he can do for you. Unless you are interested in building yourself sometimes that is about the best option.

Since you want to reuse some parts unless you can find a local builder you are going to have to build it yourself. It is not all that hard to do, but requires nerve and a lot of study--especially if you don't have somebody around to show you the ropes.

If I was interested in learning how to build a computer and didn't have somebody to teach me how, I would start by reading Risley's article. I would then lurk around this site for a few weeks--read tips and tricks for example and then I would shop the heck out of the various on line suppliers. If throughout the process you have questions, well that is what this site is all about.

I don't recommend that people build there own computer unless they're seriously motivated to learn about computers. On the other hand, if you possess such a motivation, there's no other path to follow.

Looking briefly over your list of parts, it's gonna be tough to build that machine with quality components for $1000. You're probably in the neighborhood of about $1200 with that 19" monitor.

If you go with an AMD cpu and a 17" monitor, the $1000 job is not hard to do.

What is better for games and recording music, AMD or Pentium?

Hi bball_1523

Hopefully this doesn't turn into the famous Intel / AMD war (you can search this forum for plenty of thoses...)

Tradititionally, AMD has been better in those categories, but when it comes right down to it, pound for pound, you can not actually see the difference, you need to run benchmarks to see the difference. Also, except for bragging rights, does it really matter if one machine can run a game at 70 fps, and the other one runs at "only" 68 fps ?????? I don't think so.

HTH

For gaming, the video card selection is far more important than whether the processor is from Intel or AMD (assuming roughly comparable processors.)

I happen to think your initial selections are pretty good, but I would go back and examine each of them carefully. Look at the reviews. Read every thing you can about NVidea's and ATI's latest offerings.

Motherboard/chipset selection are very important. Read all you can about the range of motherboards available. I would say that when I read posts from first time builders they all want to save money on the motherboard by buying second rate motherboards. That is not the place to save money. If you do your homework you can find quality motherboards, with quality chipsets, that will do the job you want for not much money. You save on motherboards by not buying the extra bells and whistles you don't need. For example, you don't need RAID for your application. Don't buy a RAID board and save a few bucks.

You don't save by purchasing cheap.

If you are planning to do gaming you might want to add a NIC to your system -- never know when you will want to go to a LAN party.

As Ron said, building is only for folks motivated to learn how to build. If you are not, look for somebody in your community who has experience doing custom builds.

Either the AMD or Intel CPU will put a smile on your face. As CH pointed out the Motherboard and Chipset are probably the most important decision. A good stable motherboard is the foundation of a good system.

You'll be happier longer with the computer using a good motherboard. Not only will it run better but it will be better supported by other hardware and software for a much longer period of time.

I have never researched motherboards before... What is the first step in finding out what the most reliable motherboards are?

-For gaming, I don't want the most greatest graphics and best video card...I just wanted a reliable good enough video card around 128 mb, that wont jack up my graphics nor will it prevent any new games from playing good, at good frame speeds.

-Also I already have a Ethernet card for Lan gaming and cable modem.

If I wanted to learn about motherboards, I would probably start by reading the threads in this Forum. As you will notice a lot of them have to do with motherboard selection. I would pay particular attention to anything written by glc, HAL9000, cricket, LawyerRon or any of the other old hands. Most really know their stuff. I would also look at whatTom's Hardware has to say about motherboards. Read the reviews. There are other good sources of information. I am sure others will tell you where to find them.

consider this wise saying from my dad

higher initial price=good performance for the years to come and satisfaction
lower initial price= dissatisfaction and grunting for years if badly picked

i myself know very little about this subject but this saying pertains quite well

(he was actually talking about a dining set, but it works for a lot of subjects )

the thing is, I want a medium price, but as cheap a medium price that is reliable as it can get.

-If I get high-end, a month later another faster more reliable motherboard comes out, then another month later an even faster motherboard and so-on! lol

If you want a place to get started look at the various ASUS boards. Traditionally ASUS has been considered a manufacturer of medium priced, but high quality boards. Start with the ASUS P4PE board, but don't stop there unless it has everything you want and nothing you don't need. Since the ASUS P4PE board is about $163, it might be a little out of your price range. You might then look at the ASUS P4S533 which runs for about $113. Look at the specs and pick out the differences. The main one is that the P4PE uses an Intel Chipset and the S533 uses a SIS chipset. The S533 is about 9 months older than the P4PE. Both are considered very reliable--very stable.

will ASUS be good enough for recording guitar/music and playing games like Unreal Tournament 2003?

Also how much does that ASUS cost?

The ASUS P4PE will do the job no problem. It runs for about $163. The ASUS P4S533 should also do the job you want. It runs for $113. The P4PE is aimed at getting the maximum out of the latest P4 processors. You should go to Newegg.com and look at the specs for both.

I think you might want to look at other boards, but the P5PE is a good board. ASUS has a reputation for being very overclockable. Intel has the reputation for being very stable. My comments have only touched two ASUS boards. Read the user comments at newegg as well as the reviews on the other websites.

There are others and, of course, there are great boards for AMD processors. In those boards the general rule is that you should stay away from the VIA chipsets. My wife has a board with a VIA chipset, however, and it works fine.

that looks like a sweet deal. Where did you find this information?

Is there ways to make monthly payments for that?

nope, no payments on stuff you get at newegg.com, for that call a company that makes computers like Dell.

Morris,

I was kinda hoping that he would go to Newegg and look these things up himself. Sort of "a give a man a fish you feed him for a day, teach him to fish you feed him for a lifetime" thing. Good systems.

bball, you can save on shipping by buying the monitor at Sams, Costco or Walmart.

do credit cards allow for monthly payments on all the hardware from newegg.com and other companies that aren't like big companies such as Dell or Gateway?

Are there options at www.newegg.com where you can specifically look up just cpu's or motherboards or ram, because all I see are the products that are on sale. It doesn't let you create a custom computer as well, just parts.
