Hi,
I just finished building my first comp, and I was wondering about average CPU temps of P4s. I'm using a P4 2.4 B Ghz and the retail HSF, and after not even five minutes and the CPU reaches a temp of 47 degrees anda system temp of 35 (C). The numbers were still climbing, and I somehow feel the temperatures will reache even higher even when idle, and was wondering what would be an unsafe temperature? Room temp is about 20 degrees. I have yet to install case fans, but plan to place one 80mm at the back for exhaust, and one at the front for intake. Hopefully this will help in the future. I would put more for exhaust, however the case and my tools do not permit. I would like to know if there would be any good in placing a fan on the side of the case, or if there are any other cheap ways of keep the computer running cool for future reference.. Oh ya, one more thing, My cpu fan speed is rather slow also (around 2300), and I was wondering if I could increase it safely to better speeds. Thanks Last edited by cheerful_mortician; 12-23-2002 at 01:15 AM. |

A P4 with a stock HSF should be running a lot cooler than that.
Try running with the case cover off and see what happens. Can you increase the speed of the fan? If the CPU temp "still" shoots up, then it sounds as though your HSF is not fitted properly. I would remove the Thermal Pad from the Heatsink, clean off the residue from the Heatsink and CPU, and use Artic Silver. There are good instructions here: http://www.articsilver.com/arctic_si...structions.htm When you refit the HSF, make sure it is sitting flat and squarely on the CPU. At 29-30 degrees steady without fans? Case? What?

c_m do you happen to have P4PE? It shows temps abotu 10c higher than it really is. That'd have you in 36c. Also the speed of the fan you reported is a normal speed.
my p4 2.4b ran at 46-48 (according to p4pe) in the beginning but eventually when the as2 set in, it went to 40-41 (that is till i upped the voltage to overclock, now its at 45-46 idle). Anyway as I said, if its the P4PE you have, then its the mobo reporting the wrong temps it reports it atleast 10c higher. (but I think it reports it even higher than that) |
