Lightbulb Newbie - Issues Building your own PC

After reading article "Build your own PC" (http://www.pcmech.com/byopc/index.htm) I started working on it. At this point I have connected all the basic components and cables. When I try to boot the PC with system disk I am seeing following issues... any help is greatly appreciated.
- When I turn on my PC I see LED for harddisk and CD Rom. I don't see power LED. CPU cooling fan is spinning. I have even checked that CPU is getting hotter when PC is on (this is to make sure that CPU is working as mentioned in the article).
- My floppy disk light is not on, If I flip the cable connection to the floppy disk, it's light is always on. Even if I take out the disk.
- I don't see anything on my monitor or even I hear any beep sound.? (monitor is connector to PCI slot vedio card)

What is wrong? If you need more info I will let you know. please HELP!

The power LED is no real problem as it can be backwards on the panle connections and not light. I would try a minumum build (one stick ram, video,no other expansion cards) and see where that would lead me.
Also look in this forum Tips and Tricks>Having troubles with a new build , and see if that helps.
Also the floppy light will remain on continually when the cable is backward. In bootup it comes on for a few seconds then goes off.

RobH,

Thanks for the advice for looking into "Tips and Tricks > Having troubles with new build" section. Basically I did some of the stuff mentioned in that section.
- Started with the bare minimum i.e. mobo, cpu, heat sink fan, power supply, 1 stick memory, video card. Still I didn't get any beep sound or any display. My heat sink fan was spinning, it could be possible that my mobo is good.
- I have done another test to check that if memory is OK, I removed it to see if I can get any beep sound for no memory. But same result no beep or display.
- Next I will be testing video card in another PC.
- How can I test if my CPU or Motherboard is OK? any help is appreciated.

Hi faslala and welcome to the PC Mechanic forums!

It IS normal for the floppy LED to light and then go out when the PC is starting. Or it can even never light up if you have the "Floppy seek at boot" option disabled in the BIOS. If the light is always lit then you must reverse the cable as RobH stated, since it's connected in a wrong way.

As I said earlier I have tested my video card and memory in other pc. Both worked, now it seems to me it is motherboard or cpu. What is the best & cheap way to test out motherboard and cpu?

Hi faslala,

What motherboard are you using?

For the floppy drive, is the end with the twist connected to the floppy drive?

Have you gone through the motherboard manual carefully to make sure your motherboard is set up properly for the CPU you're using?

What brand and wattage is the power supply?
