Recommended Fan for Atlon XP??

morriswingate gave me a recommendation for a Fan of the AMD Athlon XP 2000 but I can't remember the model. I'm looking for something in the $15 range, and overclocking is not a concern. It should be reasonably quiet and move the air really well. TIA

The retail HS & fan would be just fine. If noise is a concerm get a Zalman flower. It would be around $30 but it's as quiet as it gets.

The retail fan is from Coolermaster and I've been told they're not the greatest.

Retail fan

Hey Ron,
My kid is just now ordering parts to build an Athlon XP 1.53gig (seemed the sweet spot for price/speed) and I had him order the retail box for about $5 more just to get the fan/hs. All I have seen on the subject says it is fine if you're not planning to OC. If he decides to upgrade the fan/hs he'll have a spare. We also read reviews for mobos and from them decided to go with the Epox with the Nforce2 chipset and no RAID. He is a gamer and his old PIII 550 I built was just too slow and he had already put a Radeon 9000 with 128meg RAM in it and upgraded the hard drive and other stuff. Hope that helps.
Your old friend,
The Smokester

Another thing to consider, LawyerRon,is the warranty. If you get the Retail (aka "PIB") box, then you'll have a 3 year warranty!! I've always either used the PIB, or OEM w/ AMD recommended HS/fan combo on all my builds and yet to have a problem.

Just don't forget that chaning the stock HS/fan combo with the PIB version techically VOIDs the warranty, and AMD clearly states that this is so.

Also, in most cases, it's cheaper to buy the PIB than to go OEM and separate HS/Fan combo.

HTH

LawyerRon, check out any of the Thermalright heatsinks from here, I would recommend them for better than stock cooling.

i used the retail on a 900tb,built a 1.4tb and was a little worried so bought a globilwin, the cpu temp were about the same but the globialwin sounds like a helocopter.if i were building again i would use the retail fan it isn't much louder if any than my intel.temps ran 41 to 43 degrees.

Wow, that site has some really good prices on their heatsinks. Very good price on the Thermalright SLK 800. Have you ever dealt with them before Dr Z?

I personally have dealt with them many times (from cases to cables) and have never had a problem. Recently there have been complaints about their service, which many attributed their store expanded very quickly and them having a hard time keeping up with orders. But from my own personal experience, I would recommend them.

Thanks for the info guys, we might just take TwoRails advice and go with the Retail cpu to get the 3yr warranty. If the temps are too high, we'll get something else.
