can you fire up a psu with nothing hooked up to it? would like to check it out before hooking it up as the last one went out in a blaze of sparks and smoke, nothing else was hurt but i dont believe thats the right way to test one .

Hi samdry,

A power supply needs a "load" on it to function properly...just trying to start it up with nothing connected may cause it to burnout and fail. Try connecting a bunch of fans to it before you try to start it up.

Or you could get the Antec Power Supply tester (not sure how it works though).

A PSU can function OK with only a fan connected to it (trust me I tested this).
