My fan is really loud
Good evening everyone,
Okay, my problem is with my computer (cooling) fan. It has all of a sudden became really loud to a point where it's unbearable and very annoying. I took it apart and that seemes to solve the problem, or so I thought. When I put it back sounded normal, after about a few moments the loud "vibration kind of noise" came back. So I flicked it a couple of times, normal again, then a couple of moments and back to the noise again. I did get to observe that it only seems to make this noise (or vibration) at a certain RPM. Yes, I just happened to obseve that right at this moment ![]() Thanks! Last edited by pc_noob; 01-05-2003 at 10:53 PM. |

Might be a bad bushing or bearing

A lot of times you can peel back the sticker and put the tiniest drop of oil of the bearing/bushing and quiet em right down. Fans are so cheap I would go ahead and get another one and at least have it around if you don't install it right away.
Ball bearing ones last alot longer than ones with bushings. |

Thanks Sumdumgi! Hopefully next year we take care of the little ones they way take care of the big games.
I don't think I 've seen a fan like that unless that was a little rubber plug that will pop out. Hopefully it will work for you. |

Hi pc_noob,
Exactly which fan was it? The CPU heatsink fan or one of the case fans? Cricket

Make sure if you are using a grill(however you spell it) that it is properly tightened, but not so much so that the grill isn't touching the fan blades.
Did you check if the any cables are hitting it by any chance? |

Unfortunetly it is not the grill or the cables...It is just the fan itself (observed it for a long period of time) is either offcentered (much like a car's wheel before balancing) or something else that causes it to vibrate. I still quite don't know why. However, I apreciate the response.

Hi pc_noob,
Like was mentioned earlier, the fan's bearing are probably going out. You can easily get a replacement fan at most computer shops, Radio Shack or CompUSA. If your current fan has a sleeve bearing, replace it with a ball bearing fan...those last much longer. Cricket
